The building is intended for a posh club at Guntur. As an extension to the club, the members have teamed up with group of coaches from singapore/thailand to construct a badminton academy. Accommodations are provided in the form of luxury rooms for the coaches and visiting players. The badminton court also is intended to host national level games and is to be designed as per the norms.

The Vision
Considering the accessible roof load and that the building was to be designed as per national norms for badminton courts, structural aspects regarding, depth of trusses, spacing, decking system etc. have been intimated to the architect on basis of which the design started.

Lavaram Devineni was the architect taken on board for a generic design to the badminton court. The court roof was an 18-meter clear span slab on top of which open banquet hall has been planned.

The architect and the Consultant from Urban Shaastra design studio, were consulting Chukkapalli Ramesh (Secretary, Guntur club and also Director (Phoenix group) as they had their expertise in designing complex buildings.

 

Inimitable Features
The standout feature for the building is that; it is the first badminton court in the country with an accessible roof and the steel structure, foundation and the slab has been completed within an astonishing budget of 640Rs/Sft.

The Encounters
Since, the site had black cotton soil as its top strata with clear spans and loads, the number of under reamed piles required (if the structure were to be RCC) was quite high as the foundation cost was increasing drastically. A steel structure was proposed, with lesser weights considering the ground water table level, it was subjected to use racker piles.

Clients had given a strict budget upon which the need to look at cutting down the dead weight of the structure thereby reducing foundation cost. Also, steel structure erection in already enclosed area with 18m span trusses is also a challenge.

Steel the essence
Structural Steel was the only option which resolved three of the major concern which would have arised in case it would be a RCC design. Foam work for the slab at a height of 33 feet, heavy foundation loads thereby increasing piling cost and post tensioned slabs with lesser depth have lesser natural frequency. All the three are addressed with structural steel where used a lattice truss system where the intended deflection control and the vibration control was achieved.

For buildings with strict geometrical and loading constraints, only structural steel could provide economical and sustainable solution without compromise on the quality control. Contrary to the belief that structural steel solutions may not reach enough for contractors and builders. In Non-metro cities, it is quite practical, easy to convince clients as long as the cost benefit shows. In the tier 2/3, towns and cities, the workmanship for concrete structures is quite bad and the timelines for project are often exceed by long periods. If the common belief among people regarding corrosion, firefighting of steel buildings can be removed, then this would increase the scope for structural steel buildings in the near future.

The Flying House is inspired from the sloping site situated in the Khandala region for two friends that wanted to build two adjacent houses that would share common recreational areas.

Perceived
The house was designed for two friends who wanted it to be a retreat in the mountains, where each one could have separate domestic spaces with shared common recreational ones like the pool. But other than that, the clients didn’t have any set brief or rules or design styles. They had chosen the Architects due to their focus on creating unique projects both in design as well as construction.

Thought Process
The initial thought process, was inspired from the foggy mountains of Khandala, and the design team wanted to explore the unique topography of the site to create an innovative structure that felt that it was extruded from the surrounding contours. With the client brief in mind, it was transformed and extruded in the mountainous site to form two wings that will house their families with a cantilevered infinity pool that will give a ‘flying’ effect.

Steeling effect
Steel was considered from the beginning as a major structural and construction material since it enables a greater control on the geometry of design as well as the flexibility of doing it off-site. Any on site construction for the cantilevered sections would have been more difficult due to the steep topography and would have resulted in larger and heavier structural solutions. Steel allowed a minimum but an efficient structure that allowed the architectural intent to be taken ahead to achieve that truly flying effect on a cantilevered pool.

Adani Group is coming up with its corporate office in Shantigram Ahmedabad. The entire project was sub-divided in North Wing, West Wing, South Wing and Auditorium. The entire development had two basements to cater for the parking requirements and to house the services. North and south wing consists of ground floor, 4 office floors to house various group companies, cafeteria is planned at the roof of north & south wing. West wing houses a stilt parking for executives, a triple height executive atrium, data centre floor, 7 office floors and Director’s floor at the top. On the East side, Auditorium is planned with executive dining on the roof of the Auditorium. Dedicated separate elevators and entrance are planned for the chairman.

Highpoint of the Structure
The major highlight of the structure is the Auditorium. As per the original design, the auditorium was planned as cantilevered structure supported on inclined shear walls on the fixed end. The approximate size of auditorium is around 32 m x 30 m, cantilevered trusses 10 m deep were proposed on the two edges anchored to the shear wall. Steel plate girders were planned to support the floor deck of the auditorium floor and supporting the floating columns to support the roof of the auditorium.
Subsequently, pair of tree columns were introduced to facilitate the speed of construction and to economise the structure. Main public drop-off for the office is below the auditorium. Auditorium structural system comprises of plate girders at the floor level and trusses at the roof level to support the executive dining area. Due to large spans structural steel became an obvious choice for the structural system.

Plate girders spanning from core to the arms of the tree columns formed the primary supporting system. Secondary beams spanned between girders to support the auditorium floor and raking slab. Trusses were fabricated using B/up box sections. The depth of the truss is approximately 4.5 m plate girders spanned between the trusses. Secondary beams spanning between plate girders were provided to support the deck slab construction.

The other interesting aspects of the structure are the four-floor high Public atrium spanning 30 m, and triple height Executive atrium spanning 16m which supports a heavily loaded Data centre above it. In the public atrium area, architects wanted large column free span. However, some utilities had to be housed over the atrium at fourth floor. To support the large column free are deep girders spanning 30m were proposed and the fourth floor was suspended from these girders. The recently completed office building for NMMC is an iconic building that stands apart from other structures in aesthetics, functionality and the structural design competencies associated with it. Primarily, the structure intends to be the main office building for the NMMC (Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation) and it stands at sector 15A at CBD, Belapur. M/s Hiten Sethi Architects Pvt. Ltd were the Architects for this project and M/s SACPL – the Structural Design Consultants.

The idea of building the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) came around 2005. Prior to the present location, the site selected was in Vashi, where two existing buildings were present at the site and the NMMC wanted to transform these buildings into the NMMC headquarters. The idea was to bring all the departments under one roof.

However, later it was decided that a new plot at a prominent location should be selected to create the NMMC headquarters. CIDCO has always stated that Navi Mumbai is the city of the 21st century.
