What is a waterjet? How does an abrasive waterjet work? These are the 2 most common questions asked in our field. Waterjet cutting is an aggressive erosion process using energy focused in a stream of highly pressurized water. Therefore a water jet basically cuts material using a stream of high pressure water. Companies want savings and a Hydrajet waterjet offers just that. With the versatility, edge quality, no heat needed and no tool changing a Hydrajet waterjet is very efficient. Regarding an abrasive water jet the waterjet stream is focused through a small diamond or sapphire orifice which creates a vacuum. The vacuum pulls the abrasive from the abrasive inlet into the mixing chamber. In the mixing chamber the abrasive is introduced into the high pressure stream of water. Next the abrasive water is projected into the focusing tube where a cohesive and energized stream travels to the material. The abrasive waterjet has many applications. Steel, titanium, stone, aluminum, copper, stainless steel, glass, Plexiglas, graphite bronze and Kevlar are some of the most common uses for abrasive waterjets. The abrasive is the highest consumable cost. To determine the operating costs, it’s better to determine the most efficient flow rate. The higher the flow rate, the higher the cutting speed.

Typical waterjet applications cut materials between 1/8” and 8”. Some applications can be performed on larger materials as well. Each waterjet is linear for thickness. There are several edge qualities available. Edge quality is a result of travel speed, orifice size, abrasive flow and abrasive grit. The coarser an edge is the more striations you will notice.
