Explosive atmospheres, rough conditions, extreme temperatures—process industries pose particular challenges to people and technology. This also applies to the thin clients that are common in office environments. Unlike applications on conventional PCs, applications on thin clients are not on remote servers. Only image information and input is entered via the network.

Since centralization and virtualization of computers is also a trend for modern process control systems, thin clients have become more important in this field, too. In order to use the technology in process industries, Pepperl+Fuchs developed industrial box thin clients that are suitable for harsh conditions. The BTC12 supplements the existing BTC01 and expands the thin client portfolio.

The BTC12 comes in a robust, enclosed IP4x housing and is designed for 24/7 operation. With its extended temperature range of -20 to +60 °C, the BTC can be installed in extreme temperatures and stowed in cabinets, drawers, or containers. All connectors are mechanically securable so the box thin client can withstand vibration.

From small stations to large chemical plants: Wherever dangerous process media are used and temperature extremes prevail, Pepperl+Fuchs’ explosion-proof products ensure the protection of personnel and equipment. Our development and production teams are continually improving the portfolio and incorporating feedback from customers and experts. A new enclosure series was developed with the aim of simplifying planning, mounting, and maintenance. Adapted to process industry requirements, this glass fiber reinforced polyester (GRP) enclosure series is is being rolled out for terminal boxes and control units first. It will be available for all Pepperl+Fuchs products and solutions in the future.

As early as the planning phase for a terminal box or control station in the new GR series, plant designers will benefit from flexible device configuration. Based on customers’ needs, terminals and switching elements can be individually positioned on the 10 mm mounting rail—without the need for an additional mounting base. Spacers ensure that every single component can be mounted efficiently at different heights. This saves space and helps users incorporate more functions in one enclosure.

Beyond the planning phase, the new explosion-proof enclosures also offer a broad range of applications: Because the GR series can withstand temperatures of up to -60 °C, it can be used for applications in harsh environments. This makes the latest addition to Pepperl+Fuchs' Electrical Explosion Protection Equipment portfolio a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel enclosures, which were previously required for such low temperatures.

I/O Hubs Enable Efficient Integration of Binary Sensors into IO-Link Communication

With the new I/O hubs with IO-Link interface, plant and machine builders easily and economically integrate large numbers of binary I/O into the IO-Link communication channel: combining an 8 port/16 DI hub with Pepperl+Fuchs' Ethernet IO module with integrated IO-Link master enables signal transmission of up to 128 binary I/Os to higher level-control systems.

This slim solution from a single source reduces cabling complexity and minimizes wiring errors, as it requires only one connection for signal transmission and power supply. It also allows a mixture of IO-Link sensors and common binary sensors in one setup, freeing users from technological restrictions.

Using the IO-Link 1.1 and COM3 standards, process-specific device parameters are stored in the I/O hub. At the same time, IO-Link ensures that these settings are saved in the IO-Link master. If the parameters are changed at any time via the configuration tool, by the PLC or by operating elements connected to the I/O hub itself, they are stored both on the hub and on the master.

When replacing the I/O hub, the master automatically makes these process-specific device parameters available again to the new hub. This makes it quick and easy to replace devices during operation, since the user does not have to set any process-specific device parameters.

SAP and Pepperl+Fuchs are planning to strengthen their IoT cooperation in the process industry. This was announced by the two companies at the ACHEMA trade fair in Frankfurt. The cooperation includes coordinated development of joint solutions, as well as sales and implementation. The cooperation centers on two areas: Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance for production plants as well as IoT solutions for product logistics in continuous processes.

Lowering maintenance costs by preventing and reducing downtime is the main focus of the companies’ collaboration. Pepperl+Fuchs and its subsidiary Neoception provide components for harmonized IoT communication between field devices and the SAP Leonardo innovation platform. Apps and analytical tools from field device manufacturers can be seamlessly integrated into the platform. With this, SAP optimizes the interplay between field device service requirements and manufacturers’ operation and maintenance processes.

The goal is increasing efficiency of container management to ensure a sound supply chain from manufacturer to end user. For its part, Pepperl+Fuchs supplies autonomous level sensors that connect wirelessly to the SAP cloud platform.

“By working with Pepperl+Fuchs, we can further advance the integration of IT and OT,” says Hala Zeine, President of Digital Supply Chain and Manufacturing at SAP. “This enables us to tap into the added value that modern field devices can generate—also at the business level.”
