Pemnat

Pemnat contains pemetrexed and belongs to a class of medications called antifolate antineoplastic agents. Pemnat may also be used for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (nslc). pemnat is used with cisplatin for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (a type of cancer that affects the inside lining of the chest cavity) which cannot be treated with surgery. Pemnat interferes with the growth of cancer cells and slows their growth and spread in the body.

TYPICAL USAGE: Adjuvant treatment of oestrogen-receptor positive early invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women; adjuvant treatment of oestrogen receptor positive early breast cancer in postmenopausal women following 2-3 years of tamoxifen therapy; advanced breast cancer.

SIDE EFFECTS: Hot flushes, vaginal dryness, vaginal bleeding, hair thinning, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, arthralgia, bone fractures, rash, oedema, myalgia, fever, weight gain, leucopenia, flu-like syndrome, asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness, abnormal liver enzyme values, thrombophloebitis, anaphylaxis.

DRUG INTERACTION: This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur:estrogens, tamoxifen.

MECHANISM OF ACTION: Anastrozole prevents conversion of androstenedione to estrone and to oestradiol by inhibiting aromatase, thus leading to significantly reduced serum oestradiol concentrations.

TYPICAL USAGE: Anti fungal agent.

DRUG INTERACTION: Rifampin*, and Rifabutin*

MECHANISM OF ACTION: Chemotherapy primarily refers to the treatment of cancer with an antineoplastic drug or with a combination of such drugs into a standardized treatment regimen. Certain chemotherapy agents also have a role in the treatment of other conditions, including ankylosing spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn''s disease, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma.The most common chemotherapy agents act by killing cells that divide rapidly, one of the main properties of most cancer cells. This means that chemotherapy also harms cells that divide rapidly under normal circumstances: cells in the bone marrow, digestive tract, and hair follicles. This results in the most common side-effects of chemotherapy: myelosuppression (decreased production of blood cells, hence also immunosuppression), mucositis (inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract), and alopecia (hair loss).

TYPICAL USAGE: Increase yield of autologous blood. Anaemia of chronic renal failure. Anaemia in zidovudine-treated HIV infected patients. Anaemia related to non-myeloid malignant disease chemotherapy.

SIDE EFFECTS: Hypertension, myalgia, arthralgia, flu-like syndrome, rashes and urticaria, hypertensive crisis with encephalopathy-like symptoms e.g. headache, confusion, generalised seizures, thrombosis.

DRUG INTERACTION: Haematinics enhance efficiency. Increased dose of heparin in patients undergoing dialysis.

MECHANISM OF ACTION: Binding of erythropoietin to the erythropoietin receptor leads to receptor dimerization, which facilitates activation of JAK-STAT signaling pathways within the cytosol. Activated STAT (signal transducers and activators of transcription) proteins are then translocated to the nucleus where they serve as transcription factors which regulate the activation of specific genes involved in cell division or differentiation.
