Concrete is one of the most widely used construction material throughout the world. It is obtained by mixing together cement, aggregates, water and sometimes admixtures. The mixture when placed in forms and allowed to cure, it hardens into a rock like mass. The quality of concrete is exclusively dependant on the quality of its ingredients and the workmanship for concrete making and placing. The behaviour and properties of concrete and concrete making materials can be better understood by conducting first-hand experiments in the laboratory. Thus, the objective of this manual is to make the students aware of different tests required to be performed for these materials as per Indian standards and the acceptable limiting values. By following the instructions given in this manual one will gain familiarity with current specifications. 

Plate load tests involve applying increasing loads to circular or square steel plates placed on the ground surface or in a pit to determine the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of soil.

The Contractor must engage the services of a Professional Engineer licensed and registered in New York State, experienced in all aspects of pile load testing and acceptable to the Deputy Chief Engineer Structures (D.C.E.S) to perform the load tests and to prepare report of test results, as outlined in Chapter VIII. The Contractor's agreement with the Professional Engineer shall provide for additional technically qualified personnel to be at the test site at all times during testing to assure that loads are being maintained and to record data.

Brick for external use must be capable of preventing rain water from passing through them to the inside of walls of reasonable thickness. A good brick should aborb water maximum 1/7 th of the weight of the brick

Typically, the methods used are ultrasonics, radiography, magnetic particle, eddy current, dye penetrant and visual methods. This important and growing industry is involved in applying these proven techniques and procedures to the full range of engineering structures

Non-destructive testing of piles has gained fair acceptance for various purposes e.g., quality control/quality assurance, verification of existing conditions, and quantification of dimensions. The correct use of this technique can greatly simplify and expedite investigation, and be economical in addressing concerns or question on pile conditions. Equally, its incorrect use can cause controversies, delays, and/or create adverse reputation for the technology. Integrity issues for cast-in-situ piles have resulted in a serious need for non- destructive test inspection methods to detect the extent and location of serious flaws and prevent failures under service conditions. Integrity inspection performed after installation is often the most reasonable alternative available to as- sess the pile quality. A most commonly used post construction integrity test is the low-strain pile integrity test commonly referred as PIT. In this type of integrity testing, a low strain dynamic impulse is given to the pile top by a hand held hammer and the velocity of the pile top is monitored using an accelerometer. The low strain impulse will generate a low stress wave that propagates through the pile and reflected at places where there are changes in the properties of con- crete, cross-sectional area of the pile or stiffness of the soil surrounding the pile.

Observation and alteration of material performance, including the fabrication of novel materials and measurement of their properties, occurs in the Materials Testing Laboratory.

Colour in water may be due to inorganic ions, such as iron & manganese, humus & peat materials, plankton, weeds and industrial wastes. The term ‘colour’ is used to mean true colour that is the colour of water from which turbidity has been removed. The term apparent colour includes not only the colour due to substances in solution, but, also that due to suspended matter. Apparent colour is determined on the original sample without filtration or centrifugation.

DGPS requires that a GPS receiver be set up on a precisely known location. This GPS receiver is the base or reference station. The base station receiver calculates its position based on satellite signals and compares this location to the known location.

The compressive strength of concrete is given in terms of the characteristic compressive strength of 150 mm size cubes tested at 28 days (fck)- as per Indian Standards (ACI standards use cylinder of diameter 150 mm and height 300 mm). The characteristic strength is defined as the strength of the concrete below which not more than 5% of the test results are expected to fall.
