Uniform Kneading, Mixing and Extruding Process

Application & Process :

The Sigma Mixer with extruder is used for mixing, kneading and extruding of highly viscous mass, sticky and dough like products, Mixing of pastes, rubber, and heavy plastic masses, applications in Food, Rubber, Pharmaceutical, Chemical and agro industries, Dry powder to wet phase mixing. This mixer is most suitable for highly viscous material and dough like masses.

The extruder mixer is designed to handle difficult to discharge products such as hot melts and butyl sealants, as well as other medium to high viscosity pastes. This type of mixer combines the action of the Double Arm Sigma Blade Mixer with an extrusion screw placed in the lower part of the mix trough. During mixing, the extrusion screw is run in reverse which imparts a third mixing action on the product, increasing mixing efficiency.

The sigma kneader is a double arm mixer with extruder, the two "Z" blade rotate towards each others at same or different speed inside a W- shaped product container and extruder screw is located between the two blade with separate gear motor drive. The extruder screw is rotates in forward direction for extruding process and rotate in reverse direction during mixing process. Speed of the extruder to be adjustable by VFD. The twin screw basin kneading machine with two horizontally arranged kneading blades, which are deeply geared into one another and strip themselves reciprocally. Each blade moves the material in opposite direction thereby providing excellent cross mixing of all raw materials. The blades pass the trough walls and each other at close clearances resulting in good mixing. The close clearance produces a shearing and tearing action that is beneficial to the size reduction of solids.

The extrusion screw is located in the saddle section and runs in a cylindrical trough tangential to and below the 2 mixing blades.

  • When the product has finished the mixing cycle, discharge/extrusion is performed simply by running the extrusion screw in a forward direction.
  • The double arm sigma blades normally continue to run throughout the extrusion process providing a thoroughly mixed product at all stages of the production cycle.
  • Speed variation of the extrusion screw allows adjustment of the product flow, depending on the viscosity.

Uniform Dry Mixing Process

Application & Process :

Ribbon blender mixer is used for uniformly dry mixing and blending applications in the pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic, food, pesticides, detergents, and plastics industries. The Ribbon Blender comprises a U-shaped horizontal trough, specially designed Double Helical Ribbon Agitator, rigid fabricated structure motor, gearbox.

In operation, a material is filled to the top of the outer ribbon. The shaft rotates at relatively low speed and the moving ribbons push the material back and forth mixing it. The outer ribbon rotation displaces the material from the ends to the centre while the inner ribbon rotations move the material from the centre to the ends. This counter-current action results in homogenous blending. Mixing is achieved in 15 to 20 minutes with 90 to 95 % or better homogeneity. The bottom discharge provided for unloading of the material and easy cleaning of the mixing drum. A specially designed self-adjusting sealing arrangement of unique design is provided to ensure that no black particle enters into the mixing drum.

Uniform Kneading, Mixing and Extruding Process

Application & Process :

Extruder is used to convert wetted powder / Dough material into uniform size extrudes / granules with addition of binders. Applications are mainly pharmaceuticals, chemicals, Agro Chemical, ceramics, herbals, polymers, catalysts, food, sugar industries etc.

Axial Press extruder has either single or twin screws, depending on the output required, which transfers the materials to the flat die. The thickness of the die can be provided as different thickness to deliver a range of compressive energies. The axial die perforation size range available from 0.7 to 5 mm with varying thickness up to 5 mm.

The screws transport the wetted powders/ dough to the straight sieve/die which can be provided with varying thicknesses as can the holes for extruding. The extrusion takes place at the face of the mesh. Our axial dies are available from 0.7 - 5 mm with varying thickness up to 5 mm.

The fluidized powder is wetted until liquid bridges are formed between particles. Segregation of powder doesn't take place as different powder is glued together on a micro scale. Prism Planetary Mixer is ideal for mixing of wet/dry powder materials. It has a homogeneous mixing action i.e. emulsions and semisolid. It integrates mixing, vacuuming, heating, cooling and homogenizing functions into single machine, resulting in a considerably reduction in cycle time.

The basis of mixing system of Planetary Mixer is a combination of planetary- rotating paddle agitator. 2 Nos. Anchor type agitator with cross baffles rotates in anti-clockwise direction with planetary motion in there axis. While paddle revolves in a clockwise direction with planetary action, generating a disturbance in the normally circular flow pattern and dampen vortex formation. The Nauta mixer is a planetary rotating screw near the wall of cone without end resting of screw. The principle of blending is based on the differential travel speeds of product particles in the conical section of the vessel. The screw agitator turning on its axis produces a lifting action as it spirals the material in an upward flow. At the same time the screw orbits the tank, the screw removes material away from wall and deflects it into the centre of the tank setting up a spiral current thought the batch.     Spherodizer (also known as spheroinizers) provide a spherical product that is a more attractive as well as higher performing final granular product form than unspheronized. The Spheroinizers are implemented to produce uniform spheres for a wide range of technical as well as marketing driven reasons. Spheroidization can be used to improve the following:

    • Limit dusting and fines generation
    • Produce granule with a smooth surface

    Narrow size distribution is controlled through the use of one of Prism's extruders such as Basket Extruder or Axial extruder to define the diameter of the feed material for the Spheronization Process.

    Feed material to the Spherodizer falls onto the high speed rotating chequered plate within the walls of cylinder of Spheronize of pellets. This plate contains many small sharply edged pyramids which cut the feed granulates to length at approximately 1 to 1.5 times their diameter. Centrifugal and gravitational forces create a mechanically fluidized ring of these particles which are impacting not only the plate but also each other and the walls with great velocity. With these impacts, they are reformed into spheres with a slight surface densification. Fines which were generated during the process are worked back into the spheres themselves leaving a very low dusting process with spheres which tend not to dust because of their slightly harder exterior and lack of corners.

    Variables for this Spheronization process include the formulation, the plate's pyramid sizes, the plate's rotational speed, and finally the time that the granules are allowed to stay inside the spheroinizers.

    Batch processing is typical for the requirements of pharmaceutical applications while the larger industrial Spheronization applications often employ the higher capacity cascade Spheronization method where granules are continuously moving through 2 or more Spherodizer bowls in a cascade layout to create the final spherical form required.

    The homogenizer is often necessary to mix one or more substances within a liquid.     The filter press is a solid liquid separation device using the principle of pressure feeding. It is highly efficient, compact, dewatering device for separating solids from liquid slurries in the form of compressed cake.
