Case of Devyani
Kapil Srivastava called us up for an urgent counselling session for his daughter, Devyani, who had appeared in 10th standard board exams recently. He told us that Devyani, is a very hard working and an intelligent girl but she is very confused as to what career she should pick up for himself.
Three days later, when Devyani came with her parents for career guidance and counselling session with us, she was given an Aptitude test. After the test results were out, we got into conversation with Devyani, and her parents – Kapil and Sharda. They told us that, since she finished her exams, Devyani has changed her career options about 5-6 times:
They told her to do graduation in commerce as she was good in maths and economics and complete CA.
Her friends had told her that she should do engineering as all of them are getting into Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
Devyani’s grandfather who was a chartered accountant, suggested her to do a course in Actuary as she is very good in maths and actuaries are in in short supply in the current job market.
Devyani’s sister Kavita, who is six years older to Devyani, and is currently doing final year MBA –Finance told her to complete graduation in Arts/BMS and then get into MBA –Marketing.
Devyani was initially thinking to get into investment banking, earn a lot and settled down in a foreign job.
Devyani’s uncle Ashok (her father’s elder brother) tried to pressurise her into Medical saying the family should have at least one Doctor if not more.Devyani’s profile and test assessment indicated that she was not emerging as a science student. Therefore, based on her interests and the discussions that ensued around the test analysis, it was decided that she could follow the following options:
She may take up commerce through her graduation and simultaneously prepare for CA.
Since she is good in maths, she may do a course in Actuary or she could get admission Indian Statistical Institute to pick relevant job in research and development in India or abroad
She may do graduation in Arts or Commerce and then proceed to complete MBA/MMS in Marketing or Finance.
She may take up graduation in Commerce and then prepare herself to do enter into competitive exams for IAS/IFS/IPS.
