We have in store for our clients Fenugreek (METHI), which is widely reckoned for its medicinal and culinary properties. It is an annual herb that is robust and grows light green leaves. The plant is 30-60 cm high and grows slender, beaked pods, 10-15 cm long. The pods are 10-15 cm long and each pod has 10-20 small hard yellowish brown seeds. The seeds are smooth and oblong and about 3mm long. Each seed is grooved across one corner and bears a hooked appearance.
Origin and Distribution:
It is an indigenous plant of South Eastern Europe and West Asia. Nowadays, it is commercially cultivated in India, Argentina, Egypt and Mediterranean countries (Southern France, Morocco and Lebanon). Fenugreek is cultivated in the following Indian states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab.
Fenugreek is a cold season crop and can tolerate frost and extremely low temperature. It requires moderate to low rainfall for cultivation. Fenugreek can be cultivated in all types of soils including black cotton soils. Loam and clayey loam soil with proper drainage is ideal for Fenugreek. It can also be grown on black cotton soils.
