Botanical name of fenugreek is Trigonella foenum-graecum. In Hindi, it is known as ‘Methi’ and in Tamil, it is ‘Venthayam’. Fenugreek crop is commercially cultivated for its seeds, which are used as condiments and as a flavoring agent for flavoring food preparations. Largest production center of fenugreek in India is Rajasthan with more than 72% area under fenugreek cultivation. Other major production centers of fenugreek in India are Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

Fenugreek seeds are used as a carminative, tonic and galactagogue. Fenugreek paste in water is used in poultices for boils, and abscesses.
