The "Kalachakra" can be translated in Vajrayana Buddhism as a gyre of time. It means the "time-cycles" and forms a Kalachakra system which includes three of such cycles. The three gyre of time are external, internal and alternative. The external and internal cycles relates with time whereas the alternative cycles include practices which helps in gaining liberation from external and internal ones. External cycle is the cyclical process that takes place in the universe including astronomical, cosmic and historical. The internal, on the other hand, relates to the physiological cycles of the body like birth, childhood, old age death, re-birth and so on. It is also associated with the mental and emotional cycles of an individual. These cycles are not controlled by any force but are determined by impulses of energy. These impulses are called the "winds of karma". The whole theory revolves around this force - Karma - which is deeply connected with the human mind. Kalachakra is an intricate system of teaching and practice in Tibetan Buddhism involving the journey to the spiritual self, theory of karma, human mind and soul, the external aspect and other related thoughts and ideas.
Kalachakra Initiations was first started in the year 1954. Since then, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has delivered about 33 Kalachakra Initiations till date at different regions of the world. Four among them were conducted at Bodh Gaya, District Gaya Bihar (India) - the place where Buddha attained enlightenment, in the years 1974, 1985, 2003 and 2012 respectively. Kalachakra, in 2012, attracted myriads of devotees from all over the world. Approving the request of the Central Tibetan Administration, His Holiness will be seen delivering 34 Kalachakra Initiations at Bodhgaya this year.
During 14 - 25 January 2016, the presence of His Holiness in Bodhgaya, Bihar will make the place all the more pious. The initial three days will include the intriguing consecration of the venue with chanting of prayers and other such pious activities and rituals. All of the activities during the Kalachakra teachings would be done by His Holiness the Dalai Lama with the monks and senior lamas. The following three days would include the pious preliminary teachings. The teachings would be solely based on Shantideva's - A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life. The seventh day - 20 Jan includes the fascinating Ritual Dance exclusively organized and performed by the monks for the occasion. The following four days will witness the main Kalachakra Initiations delivered by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The event will be concluded with vibrant ceremonies offering prayers for long life on the last day - 25 Jan.
