Mild Steel H Beam

A Mild Steel H Beam, also commonly known as a Wide Flange Beam, Universal Beam (UB), or Universal Column (UC) (depending on specific dimensions), is a fundamental structural steel shape characterized by its "H" shaped cross-section. It is made from mild steel, which offers a balance of strength, ductility, and cost-effectiveness, making it highly versatile in construction and engineering.

1. Material: Mild Steel (MS)

• Composition: Mild steel is a low-carbon steel, typically containing 0.05% to 0.25% carbon. This low carbon content provides its key properties.

• Properties:

  • Ductility & Malleability: It can be easily formed, bent, cut, and welded without fracturing, which is vital for fabrication.

  • Weldability: Mild steel exhibits excellent weldability, allowing for strong and reliable connections in structural applications.

  • Cost-Effective: It is an economical material, contributing to the overall affordability of MS H beams.

2. Shape and Structure: The "H" Profile

• Distinctive Shape: The H beam gets its name from its cross-section, which resembles the capital letter "H". It consists of a vertical web and two horizontal flanges (top and bottom).

• Parallel Flanges: A key distinguishing feature of an H beam (especially compared to some I-beams) is that its inner and outer flange surfaces are parallel or nearly parallel, and the flange ends are at right angles. This parallel flange design makes connection and fabrication simpler.

• Optimized Cross-Section: H beams are designed for optimal distribution of material, resulting in a high strength-to-weight ratio. The wide flanges provide excellent resistance to bending moments, while the web resists shear forces.

• Section Modulus & Moment of Inertia: H beams have a significantly larger section modulus and moment of inertia compared to other sections of the same weight, meaning they can resist bending and buckling more effectively.
