SMG has its mines in the minerals-rich belts of Hospet - Bellary in North Karnataka and Goa.
The company uses the open-cut method of mining, which involves drilling and blasting or ripper dozing to break up the solid rock. Blasting takes place two or three times a week depending on production requirements.
The ore from both our Karnataka and Goa sites is of high quality containing approximately 61% and 55% iron respectively. After blasting excavators scoop up the iron ore, screen and load it to haul trucks to be transported to the crushers and screens. The crushers break down boulders into lumps and the graders separate the production into calibrated iron ore lumps and iron ore fines. Waste rock from the mines which is low in iron content is stocked separately for future use of beneficiation.
Flexibility in operation enables SMG to maximize the utilization of resources as well as cater to the needs of diverse customer segments.
SMG's roadmap for the future includes further mine acquisitions and leveraging both greenfield and brownfield opportunities, while capitalizing on the wealth of experience and expertise in the group.
