Moringa Oleifera
The Moringaceae family consists of 10 or 12 species that belong to onlyone genus called Moringa. All Moringa species are native to India, from where they have been introduced into many warm countries. The best known and most widely distributed species is Moringa oleifera. Moringa oleifera is considered one of the world's most useful trees, as almost every part of the tree can be used for food, or has some other beneficial property. In the tropics it is used as foliage for livestock. It is an exceptionally nutritious vegetable tree with a variety of potential uses.
Leaves are alternate, oddly bi- or tri-pinnate compound, triangular in outline and 20-70 cm long. The fruit pods, called "drumsticks" are 15-45 cm long, 9-ribbed capsules opening by three valves to release the seeds. The seed hullis brownish semi-permeable and has three white wings that run from top to bottom.
All Moringa food products have a very high nutritional value. You can eat the leaves, especially young shoots, young pods, flowers, roots. Leaves are low in fats and carbohydrates and rich in minerals, iron and vitamin B. The Moringa is valued mainly for its tender pods, which are relished as vegetable but all its parts - bark, root, fruit, flowers, leaves, seeds and even gum - are of medicinal value.
