Orthognatic Surgery

Orthognatic surgery is performed in order to reposition jaws. Alignment of the jaws along with harmony of the facial features is targeted. A beautiful facial profile is inclusive of the proper movement of jaws back and forth respective to which the tissues of lips, nose, cheeks and chin move. Earlier orthodontic camouflage was the procedure used to ensure the perfect interdentally contact but this could not ensure proper jaw alignment. Now a combination of both orthodontic as well as orthognatic surgery is used in order to improve the jaw alignment and solve skeletal malocculsions. Following conditions may lead to a jaw surgery:
- Wearing of teeth
- Difficulty in swallowing, biting or chewing
- Unbalanced facial features
- Chronic headache jaw pain
- Protruding jaw
- Improper bite
Anyone above the age of 18 years can perform the orthognatic surgery. Children and elderly people are not advised orthognatic surgery due to the incomplete growth of jaw and complications after the surgery respectively. Misalignment of jaws is the main reason why people opt for orthognatic surgery.
