PENIDURE LA 6 mg Injection contains Benzathine Penicillin G, a long-acting form of penicillin used primarily to treat and prevent bacterial infections, especially those caused by Streptococcus species. The "LA" stands for Long Acting, indicating its ability to maintain effective blood levels over an extended period—typically 2 to 4 weeks with a single intramuscular dose.
This injectable antibiotic is most commonly used in the treatment and secondary prevention of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, particularly in children and young adults. It is also effective against syphilis, yaws, bejel, and relapsing fever, as well as certain skin and soft tissue infections caused by penicillin-sensitive bacteria.
Once administered intramuscularly, benzathine penicillin G is slowly absorbed, allowing for sustained antibacterial activity. It is not suitable for treating acute infections requiring high blood concentrations quickly, but ideal for long-term prophylaxis.
PENIDURE LA is included in the World Health Organization (WHO) list of essential medicines due to its proven efficacy and importance in preventing complications of streptococcal infections, such as rheumatic heart disease, which remains a major health concern in developing countries.2
