Precose, for Hospital, 100 Tablets

Precose is a glucosidase inhibitor, highly recommended for the patients with type 2 diabetes. Acarbose is the main active ingredient in the medicine that works by slowing down the enzyme that turns carbohydrates into glucose, resulting in a smaller rise in blood sugar levels following a meal. Acarbose is basically an oligosaccharide that is obtained from the fermentation processes of a microorganism, Actinoplanes utahensis. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs.

Dosage:

• Use Precose as directed by your doctor
• Take Precose orally usually 3 times a day at the start (with the first bite) of each main meal
• If you also take charcoal or digestive enzyme preparations (eg, amylase, pancreatin), ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take them with Precose
• If you miss a dose of Precose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule
• Do not take 2 doses at once

Recommended dosage:

• Initial dosage- 25 mg
• Maintenance dose- 50 mg to 100 mg

Side Effect:

Some common side effects associated with Precose:

• Severe stomach pain, severe constipation
• Diarrhea that is watery or bloody
• Easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin
• Nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
• Mild stomach pain, gas, bloating
• Mild diarrhea
• Mild skin rash or itching

Warning/Precaution:

Do not use Precose,if:

• You have blockage of the stomach or bowel, or you are at risk of these problems
• You have inflammatory bowel disease, colon ulcers, or long-term (chronic) stomach or bowel problems that interfere with digestion or nutrient absorption
• You are allergic to any ingredient in Precose
• You have cirrhosis of the liver
• You have diabetic ketoacidosis (high ketone levels) or severe kidney problems

Some important safety information:

• For best results, continue regular exercise, proper diet and regular blood sugar testing with Precose
• Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Precose before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery
• Do not take more than the recommended dose without checking with your doctor.
• During the times of stress, such as fever, infection, injury, or surgery, talk to your doctor about how to control your blood sugar
• Tell your doctor immediately, if you experience symptoms of low blood sugar such as headache, fast heartbeat, tremors, chills, sweating, increased hunger, nervousness, weakness, vision changes, dizziness, drowsiness and fainting
• Lab tests, including blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin levels, and liver function, may be performed while on the medication to monitor your condition or check for side effects
• Advised for children with extreme caution
