Milk thistle (Silybum marianum), also called silybum, holy thistle and silymarin, is a member of the Asteraceae or daisy family. Other common names are Marian thistle, Mediterranean thistle, Mary thistle, variegated thistle and blessed milk thistle. The use of milk thistle in traditional medicine dates back thousands of years to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
The compounds in milk thistle seed, which are dominantly flavonoids, include silymarin, silybin, isosilybin and silibinin. Flavinoids act as powerful anti-oxidants, scavenging for reactive oxygen species in vivo. The flavonoid compounds found in milk thistle seed have been extensively studied for its role in supporting liver function.
