Sports Rehabilitation
What is Sports Injury Rehabilitation?
Sports Injury Rehabilitation is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability.
It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and where applicable, work. Society of Sports Therapy members undergo rigorous, degree-level training and are able not only to treat sports injuries, but also to help those with general aches and pains that were not brought about by sporting activity. What does a Sports Injury Assessment involve? At the first appointment, a medical history is taken and a postural assessment will be carried out. For sports injuries, detailed examination of symptomatic region will be performed, including passive, active, and resisted movements as well as appropriate muscle and ligament testing to identify where muscle tightness, weakness or imbalances exist, neuromuscular testing for strength, sensation and reflexes. Nearby joints will also be assessed in order to identify important biomechanical interactions between joints, Special tests and functional testing will be performed to elicit otherwise occult findings and assessing the ability to perform a specific activity. After the assessment, a treatment plan will be discussed and agreed with you. Also with the rehabilitation process, we will work on how to prevent such an injury being sustained again with education and exercises. Progressions will be carefully monitored to help you every step of the way.
