That is because we start thinking about the problem and not the ways to “come out of it, the solutions”. It is natural as we are not trained in “out of the box” thinking or “lateral” thinking. Vertical thinking is usual way of thinking or we can say it is sequential. Lateral thinking is closely related to creativity, as we very well know creativity is related to Right brain. Liberation from old ideas and the stimulation of the new ones are twin aspects of lateral thinking. In lateral thinking one may deliberately seek out irrelevant information, in vertical thinking one selects out only what is relevant. Lateral thinking enhances the effectiveness of vertical thinking; Vertical thinking develops the ideas generated by lateral thinking. You cannot dig a hole in a different place by digging the same hole deeper. Vertical thinking is used to dig the same hole deeper. Lateral thinking is used to dig a hole in a different place. Innovation and creativity involves forward thinking. The purpose of thinking is not to be right but to be effective. Being right means being right at all times. Being effective means being right only at the end.
