The three of us, that's Shernaz Patel, Rahul da Cunha and Rajit Kapur, joined forces in 1993. We were restless. We were driven. Even though we weren't angry, we named ourselves RAGE.
Our vision statement was simple - 'Do plays without an eye to the box office.' We opened curtains with an AIDS based double header called ARE THERE TIGERS IN THE CONGO?
The play's fate at the box office - critical acclaim combined with commercial disaster.
We put our economic oriented vision statement temporarily on hold.
In 1996, came a turning point in our journey – we adapted for the Indian stage, Herb Gardner's comedy I'M NOT RAPPAPORT. Naming it I'M NOT BAJIRAO, we pitted Boman Irani against Sudhir Joshi, and placed the two old gentlemen on a park bench in Dadar Five Gardens, Bombay's Central Park. The story of two octogenarians fighting to stay afloat in a ruthless urban world, caught the fancy of Indian audiences of every age. The result, ten years of performance, 200 odd shows and the birth of a new Indian English dialect in the theatre.
In 2000, we became musical. We staged an ambitious production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. Starring 40 actors, dancers and performers.
By 2002, we committed ourselves totally to indigenous theatre. First off the blocks was CLASS OF 84, a play about seven ex-Xavierites re-uniting. This was followed by PUNE HIGHWAY, a thriller about testing friendship in extreme circumstances. And ME. KASH & CRUISE, a tale about the changing face of Bombay, over 22 tumultuous years.
Simultaneously, we started an ambitious writer's programme called WRITERS BLOC, in association with the Royal Court Theatre, London. Two festivals have emanated from this programme, in 2004 and 2007.
Our plays have reached the shores of Singapore, Sri Lanka, Oman, Malaysia, Dubai, Germany, Holland and Belgium
We are who we are because of our trusted team who work tirelessly behind the scenes - Gopi Bagai (media & publicity); Nita Daru (ticketing & licensing); Shabbir Bagasarwala (our chartered accountant); Pratibha Sinai (accounts); Shankar (laundry) and Munna & Mani (sets)
