Black Pepper is the permanent shrub grown in Southern India which contains various medicinal properties. It is used in various dishes. Cinnamon belong to ‘Lauraceae” family and it botanical name is Cinnamomum Veram. It is also called sweet wood. Cinnamon grows in areas up to an altitude of about 1800 m. humid tropical evergreen rain forest conditions favors the best growth of cinnamon. The tree can reach up to a height of 6 to 15 meters on full growth. Well-drained, deep sandy soil, rich in humus is suitable for the crop. It is commercially cultivated in the state of Kerala, Tamilnadu and Karnataka.

The plants will be ready for harvest in about 3 years after planting. Harvesting is done during two seasons, the first in May and second in November. It has huge demand domestically and internationally as due to the many health benefits.

Commercial verities of Cumin:

RZ: 19: This are tall variety of cumin with pink color, erect stems and bold pubescent grains; tolerant to wilt aswell as well as blight. It matures in 4 to 5 month.

GC -1: This variety are erect growing cumin which are bold, linear, pink flower and oblong, ash brown color grains; tolerant to wilt diseases; start maturing in 3 to 4 months.

RZ -209: This variety is an erect growing variety of cumin with bold, grey, pubescent grain, pink flowers, resistant to wilt and blight diseases; matures in 145 to 155 days.
