The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, comparable to a film in a camera, which perceives the image and transmits the signals to the brain through the optic nerve. The vitreous is the clear jelly that fills the cavity of the eye. The vitreous and the retina can be affected by multiple age-related, systemic (diabetes, hypertension), genetic and trauma-induced disorders.
Premature babies can be affected by retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Diabetes and hypertension can cause changes in the blood vessels of the eye causing fluid leakage and intraocular bleeding. Hereditary and age-related degenerations can affect the central retina (macula) leading to loss of fine vision and color vision. High myopia, uncontrolled diabetes and trauma can cause separation of the retina from its normal position, a condition called retinal detachment.

Cornea and Refractive Surgery

The cornea is the transparent dome-shaped layer in front of the eye. It helps bending the light rays and focusing them on the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eye. An optimum curvature of the refractive surfaces of the eye (cornea, lens, length of eyeball) is required to accurately focus the light rays on the retina for a clear image. Various infections, inflammations, injuries and genetic diseases reduce the transparency of the cornea and interfere with vision.

Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma is a condition where raised fluid pressure in the eye causes progressive damage to the optic nerve and gradual loss of vision eventually leading to blindness. Rise in fluid pressure can occur due to an inherent abnormality (open angle) or obstruction (closed angle) of the drainage channels of the eye. The damage to optic nerve may be completely silent, hence the need to specifically screen for this condition. Certain medications (steroid eye drops) and ocular injury can also lead to glaucoma.
Glaucoma can occur at any age and may affect even children and newborns. People with a positive family history and associated disorders like diabetes, high/ low blood pressure and myopia are particularly at risk.

The pediatric ophthalmology department deals with the various eye disorders in children like refractive errors, squint and lazy eye (amblyopia). Children may not complain of visual impairment, hence vision screening and parental counseling forms a major component of pediatric eye care.
An uncorrected refractive error (need for spectacles) is one of the main reasons of visual deprivation in children. If not treated at an appropriate age, it may lead to poor development of the visual apparatus and permanent vision loss.
Squint or cross eyes can develop in children as well as adults due to an uncorrected refractive error, eye muscle imbalance or neurological factors. These cases can be treated by prescription of glasses and prisms, exercises and eye muscle surgery.
Lazy eye (amblyopia) develops due to an improper maturation of the visual system due to an uncorrected refractive error or squint. This needs early detection and treatment with glasses and occlusion (patching) to restore normal binocular vision.
Newborns and children may also develop structural eye disorders like retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), congenital or childhood cataract and glaucoma. These if untreated at an early age, may cause permanent visual deficit.

The department of neuroophthalmology deals with vision disorders arising from the diseases of the optic nerve and the brain. The eye is a peripheral sensory organ for vision and is an extension of the brain. It perceives visual impulses and sends the signals to the brain for recognition and appreciation of the image seen by the eye. Thus some disorders of the brain can involve the visual nerve fibers and lead to eye muscle weakness and vision loss.

The department of Orbit and Oculoplasty deals with the diseases of the socket of the eye (orbit), eyelids and tear drainage (lacrimal) system. Diseases of the ear, nose and throat can also affect these structures. Common diseases affecting the orbit are tumors which can cause protrusion of the eyeball (proptosis). Eyelid problems like inversion (inturning), eversion (outturning) and drooping can occur due to lid muscle laxity due to aging and nerve weakness. The tear drainage passage can get blocked causing stagnation of fluid in the tear sac and secondary infection (dacryocystitis) manifested by constant tearing and swelling in the inner corner of the eye.

Refractive errors constitute the most important cause of asthenopia (tired eyes) and visual impairment in any age group. Prescribing the right pair of glasses can be an art in itself. Pushpagiri Eye Institute has qualified optometrists who dispense glasses and contact lenses under the supervision of ophthalmologists. The contact lens department offers trial, fitting (insertion and removal) and lens care education for various types of rigid and soft lenses. Eye diseases like keratoconus, aphakia, astigmatism and presbyopia which require special spherical and toric lenses are prescribed by trained ophthalmologists. Cosmetic (colored) and therapeutic (bandage) lenses are also available.

The ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) is a state-of-the-art refractive error solution that is ideal for anyone who has the need or desire for removal of power with high quality of vision correction. ICL or Implantable Contact Lens, as the name suggests, is a kind of contact lens which is implanted into the eye and does not require frequent removal like a normal contact lens. This phakic* IOL has numerous advantages including its correction of the widest range of myopia (near sightedness), hyperopia (far sightedness) and astigmatism (cylindrical power).

Term used when the natural lens of the eye is intact and is not removed

The ICL Candidate

Good candidates for the ICL include patients who:
  • Are between the ages of 18 and 45 years.
  • Are nearsighted or farsighted, including those with mild, moderate, and high power with or without occurrence of astigmatism. The Toric ICLTM, capable of correcting myopia and astigmatism together and combines two procedures into one.
  • Have proper anterior chamber depth and acceptable eye tissue cell density (this will be determined by the eye surgeon or ophthalmologist after a comprehensive eye exam).
  • Have not had a change in their eyeglass prescription of more than 0.50 Diopters in a year.
  • Are not currently pregnant.
  • Have no known allergies to medications used during refractive surgery or no other contraindications.
  • Have dry eyes, severe myopia, or a thin cornea (non-LASIK candidate).
