Media Center PC - Various Topics This article expands upon a number of topics related to Media Center PC's, including: - processor speed, - standby mode, - picture quality and - commercial removal

I have seen a number of posts about Sony Media Center computers that say that Sony does *nor provide upgrade editions of Windows MCE, and the other MCE vendors (HP, Dell, Gateway) do. This is important, because you can't buy upgrade editions (I don't have the full OEM media, but I assume that it is only for full installation, not an upgrade).
Properly configuring standby mode is a pain, but necessary unless you want to leave your computer on all the time. Programs that force standby (available from some MCE forums) are ridiculous, they will probably screw up your computer and will certainly shut it down at inappropriate times. Standby entry determination depends largely upon CPU utilization, so faster computers will behave better. For any media center computer, I recommend buying a fast CPU (in today's market a 3.5 GHz Intel or an MID 3500+ at a minimum). Dual-core processors complicate matters; at this time the individual cores tend to be slow, and they are less compatible, although that will improve in the next few months.
My computer will enter standby while the Windows disk defragmenter is running. Its crappy, but one would expect it to be using the disk more than 10% of the time.
