Amongst methods employed for protective and decorative purpose of aluminium profiles used in buildings and architectural line, powder coating is spreading and getting popularity worldwide. In our country also it is slowly gaining ground because of its inherent attributes of outstanding stiffness and durability and the variety of attractive colors that it offers.

Powder coatings are solid paints ground in fine powder. The finely ground powder is fluidized in a hopper with the help of completely clear, dust and moisture free compressed air at low pressure. The fluidized powder is applied to the work by spraying with an electrostatic spray gun. The powder particles are charged to a potential of around 60KV and are thus attracted to the work pieces, which should be earthed. Once the powder, which is negatively charged, is sprayed on the positively charged job, curing is done in a baking oven at a temperature of around 180°C to 200°C for 10-12 minutes, thereby getting fused and giving a smooth finish.

The powder used in powder coating is typically of the thermosetting type. Although there are different resins available in powder form, including epoxy, epoxy polyester, polyurethane, acrylic and polyester. Most of the high performance architectural powders in use today are based on Carboxyl functional polyester polymers, which have outstanding toughness, exterior durability and abrasion resistance.

Anodising is a process for producing a protective and decorative film of aluminium oxide on aluminium and its alloys. The structure of the film formed is porous which enables it to absorb colors and electrolytic coloring produces a number of attractive shades. These colors are fast to light and weathering. Anodizing is the conversion of the parent metal.
Major portion of aluminium profiles are anodized in mill finish as received from extruders and produce a good attractive finsh. But sometimes in order to provide a special aesthetic appeal to the metal, these are given a special mechanical or chemical treatment prior to the anodizing process.
