The setup consists of a clear Acrylic fabrication section. Water is fed through a nozzle and discharged vertically to strike a target carried on a stem, which extends through the cover. A weight carrier is mounted on the upper end of the stem. The dead weight of the moving parts is counter balanced by a compression spring. The vertical force exerted on the target plate is measured for applied weights. Two targets are provided with the setup (flat plate and hemispherical cup).

EXPERIMENTATION :
  • To measure the force developed by a jet of water upon a target (Hemispherical cup or Flat Plate) and comparison with the forces predicted by the momentum theory.

Pelton Wheel Turbine is only impulse water turbine now in common use named in honour of Sir L. A. Pelton (1829-1908) of California, USA. It is a tangential flow impulse turbine. The water strikes the buckets along the tangent of the runner. The energy available at the inlet of the turbine is only kinetic energy. The pressure at the inlet and outlet of the turbine is atmospheric. This turbine is used for high heads. The present set-up consists of a runner. The buckets are mounted on the runner. The water is fed to the turbine, through SS nozzle with a SS spear, by means of Centrifugal Pump, tangentially to the runner. Flow of water into turbine is regulated by adjusting the spear position by the help of a given hand wheel. The runner is directly mounted on one end of a central SS shaft and other end is connected to a brake arrangement. The circular window of the turbine casing is provided with a transparent acrylic sheet for observation of flow on to the buckets. This runner assembly is supported by rigid MS structure. Load is applied to the turbine with the help of this brake dynamometer so that the efficiency of the turbine can be calculated. Pressure gauge is fitted at the inlet of the turbine to measure the total supply head to the turbine.

“WIND TUNNEL” has been developed to perform various experiments of aerodynamics and fluid flow. This is a open circuit Wind Tunnel provides a region of controlled air flow into which models can be fitted at downstream of working section. The Tunnel consists of bell mouth shaped entry to guide the air smoothly into settling chamber and stabilizes the air flow this follows working section for test section where various models can be tested. Test section with acrylic sheet, will be provided for visual observation. Working section is followed by diffuser section which reduces the dynamic pressure at the exit. A fan coupled with motor is used to produce desired wind velocity.

In the present set-up water enters the turbine through the outer periphery of the runner in the radial direction and leaves the runner in axial direction and hence it is called a mixed flow turbine. The runner is completely enclosed in a air tight casing and the casing & runner is always full of water. The water is fed to the turbine by means of Centrifugal Pump, radially to the runner which is directly mounted on one end of a central SS shaft and other end is connected to a brake arrangement. The circular window of the turbine casing is provided with a transparent acrylic sheet for observation of flow on to the runner. Load is applied to the turbine with the help of brake drum arrangement so that the efficiency of the turbine can be calculated. A draught tube is fitted on the outlet of the turbine. The present set-up is harmonious to interface the system with computer which enables to log the experimental data using computer. The educational software and data-logging package has been developed. The software environment base is of Labview of NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS, USA. This software is compatible to interfacing unit designed by Reliant Lab. This software is capable to tabulate the sample readings according to the requirement of experiment under study and results obtained can be compared. The real time data acquisition can be done by interfacing the set-up with computer using software. Software allows the user to have control on data logging, printing the stored data, preparing spread sheets in Excel etc.

Hydraulic Ram is used for pumping small quantity of water at high head, when large quantity of water at small head is available. It operates on the principle that if flowing water is suddenly brought to rest in a long pipe, a phenomenon known as water hammer occurs, wherein a pressure wave travels along the pipe. This principle is used in the Hydraulic Ram to pump water.

The set-up consists of a box incorporating pulse and non-return valves and a supply reservoir on a stand which is fed by the overhead tank. An air vessel above the valve chamber smoothes cyclic fluctuations from the Ram delivery. Different pressure may be applied to the pulse valve to change the closing pressure and hence the operating characteristic.

Single Stage Air Compressor Test Rig consists of a single stage reciprocating type air compressor driven by a motor through a belt. The outlet of the air compressor is connected to reservoir (Tank) and suction is connected to another air tank with an orifice plate and a water manometer. Kaplan Turbine is an axial flow reaction turbine named in honour of Dr. B. Kaplan, a German Engineer. This turbine is suitable for low head. The power produced by a turbine is proportional to QH.As the head (H) decreases the discharge (Q) must increase to produce the same power The present set-up consists of a scroll casing housing a runner. Water enters the turbine through the stationary guide vanes and passes through the runner axially. The runner has a hub and airfoil vanes, which are mounted on it. The water is fed to the turbine by means of Centrifugal Pump. The runner is directly mounted on one end of a central shaft and other end is connected to a brake arrangement. A transparent hollow cylinder made of acrylic is fitted in between the draught tube and the casing for observation of flow on to the airfoil vanes. This runner assembly is supported by thick cast iron pedestal. Load is applied to the turbine with the help of drum brake arrangement so that the efficiency of the turbine can be calculated. The set-up is supplied with control panel. Pressure and Vacuum gauges are fitted at the inlet and outlet of the turbine to measure the total supply head on the turbine. The present set-up is harmonious to interface the system with computer which enables to log the experimental data using computer.
