What is the GMAT Exam?

The Graduate Management Aptitude Test or GMAT is a valid and reliable predictor of your academic performance in today’s graduate management classrooms. GMAT is a computerised test in English and Mathematics to check skills and aptitude of candidates seeking admission in business schools of English speaking countries. GMAT is administered and conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). Leading business schools and management education programs worldwide recognize the GMAT as the most effective predictor of success.Simply, that means that the better you do on the GMAT the better you should do in the classrooms. This validity and reliability is important to schools when making admissions decisions.

The GMAT exam consists of four sections—Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, and Verbal. You have three and a half hours in which to take the exam, but you should plan for a total time of approximately four hours to include optional breaks.

This test is the first step in your Student Visa application process. Given that the IELTS confirms to the highest international standards of language assessment, your IELTS score is a trusted and valid indicator of your ability to communicate in English and is recognized by universities and colleges for course admissions in United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Australia and increasingly, in Europe.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test that evaluates English proficiency of candidates whose native language is NOT English.

 

Why TOEFL?Administered worldwide by Educational Testing Service (ETS), TOEFL is a prerequisite for admission into colleges and universities where English is a lingua franca i.e. the native or official language. TOEFL scores also evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not the native language. It is a prerequisite for admission to various Undergraduate, Graduate and Post Graduate programs around the world, which require students to demonstrate their ability to communicate in English as an entrance requirement.

 

Who should take the TOEFL?Non-native English speakers at the 11th grade level or above should take the TOEFL test to provide evidence of their English proficiency, before beginning academic work.

Ever since its introduction in the late 2005, TOEFL-iBT has progressively replaced both Computer Based Tests (CBT) and Paper Based Tests (PBT).

The 4-hour test consists of four sections (including speaking) each measuring mainly one of the basic language skills (although some tasks may require integration of these skills) and focusing on language in a strictly academic environment. The TOEFL internet-based test emphasis on integrated language skills and measures all four skills - Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE), conducted by Education Testing Service (ETS), is a standardized examination for all graduate school candidates. Any accredited graduate, business or professional school, or any department or division within a school, may require or recommend that its applicants take the GRE General test. The GRE General Test measures Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing Skills, which are not related to any specific field of study.

PTE, or Pearson Test of English Academic is a fully computerized English Language Proficiency test. The test is designed for non-native English speakers or people whose mother tongue is not English. Organized and conducted by Pearson, the test is accepted across a wide range of universities and institutions of higher education around the world and in almost all English speaking countries like USA, UK, Canada and Australia.

Pearson also conducts a PTE General as well as a PTE Young Learners Exam. This guide, however, is only concerned with PTE Academic, the tests applicable for students planning to study abroad.

 

There are many things that distinguish the exam from its close competitors – IELTS and TOEFL. And the first and foremost distinguishing aspect of the same is the scoring pattern and the results. As the tests are completely computerized, the results are declared much quicker, in 5 days. This makes it aptly suited for students who are in a bit of a rush.
The computer based test focusses on day to day English rather than high level English language and tests a student on his/her ability to effectively understand the language as spoken daily. The multi-level grading system ensures a better understanding of the student’s proficiency in English language.
Eligibility

All students are eligible to write the exam. As it is a generic test, there is no special subject eligibility. A student, however, must be minimum 16 years of age to write the PTE. Also, in case the candidate is less than 18 years of age (i.e. 16 or 17 years) at the time of registration, he/she must provide a parental consent. The form for the same is available on the website. Students can download the same, fill it, get it signed from their parents and send it across to the mentioned address.
Apart from that, Indian Students must have a Valid Passport. It is important to note, that irrespective of a student’s nationality, if the candidate is writing the exam in India, he/she must have a valid Passport, without which, the student would not be allowed to enter the test centre.
