904L is a non-stabilised low carbon high alloy austenitic stainless steel. The addition of copper to this grade gives it greatly improved resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulphuric acid. It is also highly resistant to chloride attack - both pitting / crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. This grade is non-magnetic in all conditions and has excellent weldability and formability. The austenitic structure also gives this grade excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures. 904L does have very substantial contents of the high cost ingredients nickel and molybdenum. Many of the applications in which this grade has previously performed well can now be fulfilled at lower cost by duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205), so it is used less commonly than in the past.

410 stainless steel is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel alloy. Unlike austenitic grades it can be heat treated ("quench and temper") to generate high strength with good ductility. 410 alloy is required when strength, hardness and wear resistance is required with some corrosion resistance. 

Due to the hardening capabilities of this steel, other properties and the resulting performance of this material are somewhat compromised. The alloy can only effectively be used in mildly corrosive environments. The operating temperature range is limited a) a loss of strength by over tempering at elevated temperatures and b) a loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures.

Type 410 is officially a stainless steel but characteristically the material is actually a compromise of high carbon steel alloy (which promotes wear resistance) with chromium stainless steel (which promotes corrosion resistance). 

This steel is ideal for use in the manufacture of highly stressed parts found in a variety of industries including petrochemical, automotive and power generation.

Background of 410 Stainless Steel Pipes and Tubes

Grade 410 is the basic martensitic stainless steel; like most non-stainless steels it can be hardened by a "quench-and-temper" heat treatment. It contains a minimum of 11.5 per cent chromium, just sufficient to give corrosion resistance properties. It achieves maximum corrosion resistance when it has been hardened and tempered and then polished. Grade 410 is a general purpose grade often supplied in the hardened, but still machinable condition, for applications where high strength and moderate heat and corrosion resistance are required.

Martensitic stainless steels are optimised for high hardness, and other properties are to some degree compromised. Fabrication must be by methods that allow for poor weldability and usually the need for a final heat treatment. Corrosion resistance of the martensitic grades is lower than that of the common austenitic grades, and their useful operating temperature range is limited by their loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures and loss of strength by over-tempering at elevated temperatures.

347 Stainless Steel is variant of the basic austenitic 18/8 Grade 304 with added Columbium - the introduction of Columbium stabilizes the steel and eliminates carbide precipitation which subsequently causes intergranular corrosion.

General Properties of 347 Stainless Steel Pipes and Tubes

Alloys 321 (S32100) and 347 (S34700) are stabilized stainless steels which offer as their main advantage an excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range from 800 to 15000F (427 to 8160C). Alloy 321 is stabilized against chromium carbide formation by the addition of titanium. Alloy 347 is stabilized by the addition of columbium and tantalum.

While Alloys 321 and 347 continue to be employed for prolonged service in the 800 to 15000F (427 to 8160C) temperature range, Alloy 304L has supplanted these stabilized grades for applications involving only welding or short time heating.

Alloys 321 and 347 stainless steels are also advantageous for high temperature service because of their good mechanical properties. Alloys 321 and 347 stainless steels offer higher creep and stress rupture properties than Alloy 304 and, particularly, Alloy 304L, which might also be considered for exposures where sensitization and intergranular corrosion are concerns. This results in higher elevated temperature allowable stresses for these stabilized alloys for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications. The 321 and 347 alloys have maximum use temperatures of 15000F (8160C) for code applications like Alloy 304, whereas Alloy 304L is limited to 8000F (4260C).

High carbon versions of both alloys are available. These grades have UNS designations S32109 and S34709.

Type 316L is the low carbon version of 316 stainless. With the addition of molybdenum, the steel is popular for use in severe corrosion environments due to the materials immunity from boundary carbide precipitation (sensitisation). After 304, this is the most common stainless steel on the market. Again it is an austenitic grade with the addition of 2-3% molybdenum which further improves corrosion resistance. It is often referred to as a marine grade stainless steel because of its effective resistance to chloride corrosion in comparison to other stainless steel grades. 

The material has superior welding and forming qualities. Grade 316 will require post-weld annealing to promote maximum corrosion resistance, though this is not necessary if Type 316L is used. 

Origins from the Paper Industry

The steel was initially produced for the paper producing industry as it has been shown to be highly resistant to the sulphur compounds used in paper processing.

Grade 310, combining excellent high temperature properties with good ductility and weld ability, is designed for high temperature service. It resists oxidation in continuous service at temperatures up to 11500C provided reducing sulphur gases are not present. It is also used for intermittent service at temperatures up to 10400C.

Grade 310S (UNS S31008) is used when the application environment involves moist corrodents in a temperature range lower than that which is normally considered "high temperature" service. The lower carbon content of 310S does reduce its high temperature strength compared to 310. 

Like other austenitic grades these have excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures, although other grades are normally used in this environment.

Grade 310L (and proprietary versions of this grade), is a 0.03% maximum carbon version of 310, sometimes used for very specific corrosive environments, such as urea production.

Unlike 304L, Type 304H has a higher carbon content making the steel more suitable for use in applications where elevated temperatures are present. It is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloy and the greater carbon content delivers an increased tensile and yield strength.

Essentially, Grade 304 is an austenitic chromium alloy which is also known as an "18/8" stainless as the make-up of the steel is 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
