Thermaflex has entered the pre-insulated pipe business by acquisition of the Flexalen business from Pipelife in 2001. Flexalen is an established brand since 1982 for flexible pre-insulated plastic pipes for District Heating/Cooling, Plumbing and Geothermal applications. In 2003 Thermaflex has introduced their own development - the new compact Flexalen 600 system – with a most advanced production technology. All Flexalen pre-insulated pipes are made from environmentally friendly materials - fully recyclable Polyolefines as the major part. Flexalen pipe systems are highly corrosion-resistant, pressure and temperature resistant (up to 95°C and 8 bar).Because of the flexible, closed cell polyolefine foam, an optimal insulation can be reached (top foam quality). Both medium pipes as the fittings are made of Polybuten and offer safe and homogeneously welded connections.Because of the high flexibility a quick and easy installation is possible. District heating as we use it today has been developed in the early days of the 20th century – but what is district heating?
The main concept is to supply hot water or steam for heating of public buildings, apartment blocks, offices etc. from a central heating plant. The hot water is distributed in insulated pipe systems running underground. In many capitals in western, eastern and northern Europe big district heating networks are installed, transporting heat over many kilometres with minimum heat loss to the consumers.
The big advantage of a central heat production is that environmentally friendly sources can be used and combined. The biggest part is sourced from caloric power plants using the waste heat from the electric power production. This is called co-generation – electricity and heat produced at the same time is doubling the efficiency compared to single electrical plants from 40% to over 80%. Other important sources are the heat from waste incineration plants, industrial processes and more and more from green energy sources like biomass/biogas/geothermal/solar.
But district heating is not only limited to big cities, since 1980 – after the second oil crisis – this concept was also translated into smaller scale – it started in countries with big natural resources for the wood related industry, like Austria. The local farmers were invited to start a business as an energy supplier – to build up local district heating systems in their villages. This became a real booming business and other countries were following. Biomass/Biogas are considered as 100% CO² neutral energy sources – and for such purposes only waste wood or especially planted trees/straw/grass are used. All big players in the oil business have already got their share in this business.
Another kind of district heating is the central supply of heating for a school, university, hotel resort, an airport or a shopping centre. This is called group heating.
A new flexible pipe solution for district heating/coolingWith the increasing demand for district heating since 1980, the energy suppliers were searching for more economical ways to build up new networks. The main problems with the existing steel networks were break downs due to corrosion and the time consuming installation during renovation. The solution was Flexalen the flexible pre-insulated plastic pipe system, developed in co-operation between a plastic pipe producer and an Energy supplier. This system was introduced 1982.
Polybutene was chosen for the medium pipes, because of the flexibility and the welded connections and the high lifetime expectancy at temperatures of up to 95°C, typical for secondary networks.
In 2000 the basic cooperation with Dutch district heating company NUON was started to develop a new Flexalen 600 system – more economical, best vapour resistance and a heat loss of less than 1°C per km. The new Flexalen 600 is most suitable for both district heating & cooling. Carrier pipes made of the new Basell Polybutene ensure even better long-term performance up to a maximum service temperature of 95°C, with the highest pressure rating compared to PE-X and PP. 
District CoolingEurope is showing a fast growing energy demand due to more need for air-conditioning that has stressed electricity networks to their limits during past record summers. Traditionally, comfort cooling is based on electricity to run the individual units. An alternative route solving this potential threat is central cooling. Centrally produced chilled water is the environmentally better solution.Energy suppliers are taking the chance and offer district cooling parallel to their heating activities. Interesting fact is that in this field the Scandinavian countries, and The Emirates (UAE) are taking the lead.
