It is a Sanskrit word meaning a resolution, free will or determination. It is believed in Indian medicine that nature heals and the physician facilitates the process of healing. Natural health demands an individual to use his/her own innate healing powers to treat or manage a specific health problem. It is appropriate to mention here some basic facts about asthma before knowing the causes.
Firstly, it may be noted that it may appear in infants and disappears as age advances. In other cases, it appears in manhood.
Secondly, it is not an infectious disease.
Thirdly, asthma is hyper-reactivity of the inner lining of the lower and upper portions of the respiratory tract.

Bronchial asthma is defined as a condition characterised by recurrent attacks of difficulty in exhalation due to widespread reversible narrowing of airways in the lungs, which varies in severety over a short period of time either spontaneously or as a result of treatment.

Remarkable hyper-reactivity of the air passages and excessive; response by narrowing to various kinds of stimuli . for example, immunological, infective, psychic, physical and chemical agents. The condition is not due to any known specific infection. The most important feature in bronchial asthma is the hyper-reactivity of bronchial tree. The air passages show excessive response by spasm to all sorts of stimuli, not only to antigen or chemicals like histamin but also to cold air, atmospheric irritants like dust, kitchen fumes, sprays, gases, extreme exercise, etc.

Asthma is -
a) episodic breathlessness which changes in severity spontaneously or with treatment;
b) wheeze (whistling noise) while breathing out, and
c) demonstrable variations in obstruction to air flow through the airways of the lungs. Experts classified bronchial asthma as extrinsic, intrinsic and mixed, also as seasonal, irregular, perennial and status asthmaticus, i.e. attack all the 24 hours.

The respiratory system in the body includes nose, pharynx, larynx, lumps, bronchi, air sacs, etc. Respiration involves two processes of inhalation and exhalation. Respiration is a function in the body which has both involuntary and voluntary nervous controls. Normal rate of respiration is slightly quicker in women than in men. Normal rates per minute are given below: In new born babies 40/min At one year 30, 2 - 5 years 24 and In adults 10 - 20.

The rate and depth of respiration varies with the oxygen demands of the body. They increase with exercise and emotion and decrease during rest. Fourthly, the total lung capacity is from 4.5 to 5 litres of air. Tidal air is the amount of air that is breathed out in one breath and this is about half a litre.

Rheumatism is an umbrella term applied to diseases which have inflammation or degenerative action on the muscles, joints and other parts of the body. It is the term used to describe the various physical symptoms arising from relative blood acidity.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an illness most often attacking those in their thirties or forties and more common among women than men. Of all the rheumatic diseases, this is one of the most serious crippling one. Onset of the disease is generally accompanied by pain and swellings in the fingers and this may eventually spread throughout the joints of the body.

Rheumatism and Arthritis are invariably accompanied by depression and mental tension. As already stated, acidification, which is the basic cause of rheumatic ailments, is due to the excessive formation of uric and oxalic acid within the bloodstream. Superfluous fat, excessive sugar constitute irritating impurities.. These harmful substances are normally rejected by the liver, unless it is excessive. In which case, liver's strength gradually decreases. Our bodies are not now used to the same extent; many of us are under-exercised; our food is not balanced or wholesome and most of us definitely over-eat. When there is a great deal of impurity in the body, it often sets up an irritation in movable parts, especially joints liable to overstrain, for instance, the knees, ankles or feet. Such irritation of a joint gives rise to inflammation and the body system attempts to localise this by reducing the circulation within the joint.

This is one reason for the swelling, redness and pain of the joints in rheumatoid arthritis. Lest one might think that arthritis is a sudden development or it is caused by some current illness, it is to be made clear here that at least ten years of subnormal health must have elapsed before a person develops rheumatoid arthritis. Most rheumatic patients suffer from fatigue in one form or another because it is often created by the very presence of rheumatic deposits in the joints. Fatigue may also arise in the mind or the digestive system or the muscular system itself. The scientific analysis of arthritis, joints and the soft tissues that support them, are the most vulnerable areas of our skeletal frame. They act as shock absorbers for our bones, bearing the brunt of weight and exercise.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can respond particularly well to Yoga therapy. It is due to an auto-immune conflict that affects both muscles and joints, causing pain, chronic fatigue and inflammation. Here, Yoga, meditation balance your immune system and stretching exercises release your stiff joints. The cleansing effect of Yoga also increases the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs, helping you to reduce your dosage. Ageing-related joint conditions are also aggravated by stress but are primarily caused by chronic ill-use of the joints. Long-term inactivity makes the joints stiff and painful . Yoga also comes in handy to overcome emotional stress caused, say, by bereavement in the family, depression, extreme excitement, all of which cause stress and have a bearing on arthritis.

Cancer Treatment

It develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are many kinds of cancer, they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person's life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and to repair injuries. Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of dying, they outlive normal cells and continue to form new abnormal cells.

Cancer cells often travel to other parts of the body where they begin to grow and replace normal tissue. This process, called metastasis, occurs as the cancer cells get into the bloodstream or lymph vessels of our body. When cells from a cancer like breast cancer spread to another organ like the liver, the cancer is still called breast cancer, not liver cancer.

Cancer cells develop because of damage to DNA. This substance is in every cell and directs all its activities. Most of the time when DNA is damaged the body is able to repair it. In cancer cells, the damaged DNA is not repaired. People can inherit damaged DNA, which accounts for inherited cancers. Many times though, a person's DNA becomes damaged by exposure to something in the environment, like smoking.

Cancer usually forms as a tumor. Some cancers, like leukemia, do not form tumors. Instead, these cancer cells involve the blood and blood-forming organs and circulate through other tissues where they grow. Remember that not all tumors are cancerous. Benign (noncancerous) tumors do not spread to other parts of the body (metastasize) and, with very rare exceptions, are not life threatening. Different types of cancer can behave very differently. For example, lung cancer and breast cancer are very different diseases. They grow at different rates and respond to different treatments. That is why people with cancer need treatment that is aimed at their particular kind of cancer.
Today, millions of people are living with cancer or have had cancer. The risk of developing most types of cancer can be reduced by changes in a person's lifestyle, for example; by quitting smoking and eating a better diet. The sooner a cancer is found and treatment begins, the better are the chances of living longer.

Depression

Depression results from a specific state of mind. Depression affects the entire body, not just the mind. Depression - one in five people will suffer during their lifetime. Depression is the leading cause and result of alcoholism, drug abuse and other addictions. Depression can be successfully treated in more than eighty percent of the people who have it. Depression is a disorder- it affects all ages, all races, all economic groups and both genders. Women, however, suffer from depression almost twice as much as men do. At least half of the people suffering from depression do not get proper treatment. Untreated depression is the number one cause of suicide.

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
Being clinically depressed is very different from the down type of feeling that all people experience from time to time. Occasional feelings of sadness are a normal part of life, and it is that such feelings are often colloquially referred to as "depression." In clinical depression, such feelings are out of proportion to any external causes. There are things in everyone's life that are possible causes of sadness, but people who are not depressed manage to cope with these things without becoming incapacitated. As one might expect, depression can present itself as feeling sad or "having the blues". However, sadness may not always be the dominant feeling of a depressed person. Depression can also be experienced as a numb or empty feeling, or perhaps no awareness of feeling at all.

A depressed person may experience a noticeable loss in their ability to feel pleasure about anything. Depression, as viewed by psychiatrists, is an illness in which a person experiences a marked change in their mood and in the way they view themselves and the world. Depression as a significant depressive disorder ranges from short in duration and mild to long term and very severe, even life threatening. Depressive disorders come in different forms, just as do other illnesses such as heart disease. The three most prevalent forms are major depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder.

Diabetes is an imbalance in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other foods into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes may vary, although both genetic and environmental factors such as obesity, stress and lack of exercise, smoking, consumption of alcohol, fatty foods, etc., appear to play vital roles. Symptoms of diabetes include - tiredness, thirst, feeling uncomfortable, frequent urination, dryness in the mouth, wounds don't heal quickly etc. Diabetes results in your body's inability to keep the amount of sugar in your blood at a healthy level. High blood sugar usually result in health problems. These include heart attacks, strokes, frequent infections, eye problems that can lead to blindness and kidney failure. Uncontrolled diabetes may cause damage to blood vessels, nerves and affects the immune system. Maintaining glucose in your blood at the right level is all that has to be done to avoid diabetes. But it is easier said than done.
There are two major types of diabetes: ·

Gastritis

Get Latest Price

Gastritis means inflamation of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis does not mean that there is an ulcer or cancer. It is simply inflammation; either acute or chronic.

What are the causes of gastritis?
Helicobacter Pylori
This is the name of a bacteria that has learned to live in the thick mucous lining of the stomach. Although it doesn't actually infect the underlying tissue, it does result in acute and chronic inflammation. It probably occurs early in childhood and remains throughout life unless cure it. The infection can lead to ulcers and, in later life, even to stomach cancer in some people.
Autoimmune Gastritis - Pernicious Anemia

The immune system makes antibodies and other proteins that fight off infection and keep the body healthy. In some disorders, the body mistakenly targets one of its own organs as a foreign protein or infection. It makes antibodies against it and can severely damage or even destroy the organ. Diseases such as lupus, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis and the type of diabetes that requires insulin, are examples. The stomach lining also may be attacked by the immune system leading to loss of the stomach cells. This causes acute and chronic inflammation which can result in a condition called pernicious anemia. The anemia occurs because the body no longer can absorb vitamin B12 due to a lack of a key stomach factor, destroyed by the chronic inflammation.

Alcohol
Alcohol and certain other chemicals can cause inflammation and injury to the stomach. This is strictly dose related in that a lot of alcohol is usually needed to cause gastritis. Social or occasional alcohol use is not damaging to the stomach although alcohol does stimulate the stomach to make acid.
Hypertrophic Gastritis At times, the folds in the stomach will become enlarged and swollen along with the inflammation. There is not a great deal known about why this occurs. A variation of this type of gastritis is called Ménétrier's disease where the gastric folds become gigantic. With this condition, there is often protein loss into the stomach from these weeping folds.

Miscellaneous

There are other but rarer types of gastritis such as eosinophilic, phlegmonous (a severe bacterial infection) and granulomatous gastritis.
Symptoms

The symptoms of gastritis depend on how acute it is and how long it has been present. In the acute phase, there may be pain or gnawing in the upper abdomen, nausea and vomiting. In the chronic phase, the pain may be dull and there may be loss of appetite with a feeling of fullness after several bites of food. Very often, there are no symptoms at all. If the pain is severe, there may be an ulcer as well as gastritis.

Electrotherapy

Much as electrotherapy has been a component of physiotherapy practice since the early days, its delivery has changed remarkably and continues to do so. The most popular modalities used these days are in many respects quite dissimilar to those of 60 or more years ago.Modern electrotherapy practice needs to be evidence based and used appropriately. Used at the right place, at the right time for the right reason, it has phenomenal capacity to do good. Used unwisely, it will either do no good at all, or worse still, make matters worse. The skill of electrotherapy is to make the appropriate clinical decision as to which modality to use and when.

A simple, but effective clinical decision making model (represented in the diagram right) can be utilised. All electrotherapy modalities (with the exception of biofeedback) involve the introduction of some physical energy into the system. This energy brings about one or more physiological changes, which are used for therapeutic benefit. Clinically, it is probably more useful to work the model in reverse - determine first the nature of the problem to be addressed. Then establish the physiological changes that need to take place in order to achieve these effects. Lastly, the modality which is most able to bring about the changes in the tissue(s) concerned should be a relatively straightforward decision. Electrotherapy treatment effects appear to be dose dependent and therefore having identified the most appropriate modality, it is important to deliver the appropriate dose. There are numerous examples of research papers that have demonstrated a significant effect at dose (a) yet almost zero effect at another dose (b).
