Saccharomyces boulardii is a nonpathogenic yeast considered as a probiotic which helps in intestinal comfort and contributes to maintain the intestinal flora. It is a hardy, acid tolerant and thermotolerant. Because S. boulardii is a yeast microbe, it cannot be killed by antibiotics and is an ideal supplement to pair with antibiotics.
History of Use
Saccharomyces boulardii was first discovered by French scientist Henry Boulard in 1920 from lychee and mangosteen fruit. S. boulardii is genetically and functionally distinct from brewer’s yeast (S. cerevisiae) and different from pathogenic Candida species. By modern techniques, it has been found that S. boulardii is a unique strain or a variant of S. cerevisiae i.e., S. cerevisae var. boulardii.
Benefits
The yeast S. boulardii has broad, versatile gastro-intestinal and systemic benefits. It is best known to support healthy intestinal function in conditions like antibiotic associated diarrhea, C. difficile disease, Candida overgrowth, parasitic infection, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and traveler’s diarrhea. S. boulardii eliminates pathogen by preventing growth of pathogens like Candida albicans, H. Pylori, Clostridium difficile, and other pathogenic yeast and bacteria strains.
S. boulardii enhances the integrity of barrier function, increases epithelial cell proliferation, inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine production. It shows Anti-infammatory & Immuno- modulatory effects by Suppressing “bacteria overgrowth” and host cell adherence, releases a protease that cleaves C. difficile toxin A and its intestinal receptor, and stimulates antibody production against toxin A.
It helps in promoting good gut flora by promoting an increase in three types of short-chain fatty acids (acetic, propionic and butyric acid). S. boulardii may also be helpful for children with rotaviral diarrhea or diarrhea due to acute gastroenteritis, amebiasis or giardiasis, or in reducing their risk for diarrhea altogether.
