A cochlear implant is an electronic device that partially restores hearing. It can be an option for people who have severe hearing loss from inner-ear damage who are no longer helped by using hearing aids.

Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, a cochlear implant bypasses damaged portions of the ear to deliver sound signals to the hearing (auditory) nerve.

Cochlear implants use a sound processor that fits behind the ear. The processor captures sound signals and sends them to a receiver implanted under the skin behind the ear. The receiver sends the signals to electrodes implanted in the snail-shaped inner ear (cochlea).

The signals stimulate the auditory nerve, which then directs them to the brain. The brain interprets those signals as sounds, though these sounds won't be just like normal hearing.

It takes time and training to learn to interpret the signals received from a cochlear implant. Within a year of use, most people with cochlear implants make considerable gains in understanding speech.

Cochlear implant may work best for children who:

• Twelve months of age or older
• Bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss  congenital or acquired
• No or less benefit with the most powerful hearing aids
• No medical or radiological contraindications
• Motivation and good family support

Cochlear implants will not work for everyone. They may work for adults who:

• 18 years or older
• Have severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears
• Little or no benefit from digital hearing aids
• Post lingual onset of profound deafness
• Have no other medical problems that would make surgery risky

The comfortable and discreet behind-the-ear (BTE) earhook is made of soft material that can be easily connected to your sound processor.

It is available in three sizes; large, medium and small*.

Mic Lock
Continuing what the Snugfit started, the Mic Lock extends Cochlears commitment to comfortable and secure retention technology. More discreet than ever, the Mic Lock is a lightweight, transparent plastic tube designed to shape around the contours of your ear and firmly secure your processor. A thin band connects the Mic Lock to the processor battery; from there, you are free to bring the tubing around the bottom of your ear and trim, customizing the size and shape of the loop. Once heated in warm water, the Mic Lock can be inserted onto the tip of the earhook, and (after a slight cooling period) your processor can be worn more tightly and comfortably behind-the-ear.
