What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a refractive surgery to reshape the cornea so that clear image will be formed on the retina. It can cure common vision disorders such as myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism.

We can correct -1D to -15D, +1 to +6D Spherical and up to 6D cylindrical powers.

It is an outpatient procedure which usually takes 5-7 mins ( Actual Laser procedure is less than 20sec per eye) per eye and can be performed for both eyes on the same day.

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) - the leading cause of vision loss for people over 60 Gradually destroys the central vision needed to see objects clearly and to perform common daily tasks

Two types clinically -dry and Wet ARMD

Dry ARMD characterized by the aging and thinning of the macular tissues.

A specific combination of vitamins and the minerals are found to reduce the risk of dry AMD progressing to wet AMD and its associated vision loss.

Wet ARMD begins when abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula eroding the tissue . These fragile vessels will leak fluid and blood.

Although only 10-15% of people with dry AMD progress to wet AMD, this form is far more serious FFA,ICG and OCT aid in assesing the abnormal vasculature

Intravitreal injections of Anti VEGFs, Photodynamic therapy , thermal laser are the treatment options available

What is cataract

The human crystalline lens, which is clear and transparent is part of the focusing mechanism of the eye.

With age, the lens becomes cloudy and opaque, thereby hampering normal vision.Any opacity in the crystalline lens, which leads to decreased vision is cataract.

What are the treatment options for Cataract?

Surgery is the only course of treatment for cataract. There are two options available for cataract surgery.

Conventional Cataract surgery or Extra Capsular Cataract Extraction(SICS/ECCE)
  • Injections are given near the eye
  • Requires an incision of 7-8 mm
  • The cloudy eye lens is removed in one piece
  • A hard plastic lens is implanted
  • Multiple Stitches are required in ECCE
  • Final glass prescription could take even up to 10 weeks

Implantable Contact Lens

The ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) is a refractive error solution that is ideal for those found unfit for other refractive procedures such as LASIK, EpiLASIK etc.

ICL or Implantable Contact Lens, as the name suggests, is a kind of contact lens which is implanted into the eye and does not require frequent removal like a normal contact lens. This phakic lens implant (here your natural lens of the eye is intact and is not removed) has numerous advantages for correction of the widest range of myopia (near sightedness), hyperopia (far sightedness) and astigmatism (cylindrical power).

Good candidates for the ICL include patients who:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 45 years.

  • Have dry eyes, very high myopia (above -12.00D), or a thin cornea (non-LASIK candidate).

  • Are nearsighted or farsighted, including those with mild, moderate, and high power with or without occurrence of astigmatism. The Toric ICLTM, capable of correcting myopia and astigmatism together and combines two procedures into one.

  • Have proper anterior chamber depth as will be determined by the eye surgeon or ophthalmologist after a comprehensive eye exam.

  • Have not had a change in their eyeglass prescription of more than 0.50 Diopters in a year.

  • Are not currently pregnant.

  • Have no known allergies to medications used during refractive surgery or no other contraindications.

The ICL is made of Collamer ®, a highly biocompatible advanced lens material which contains a small amount of purified collagen. Collamer does not cause a reaction inside the eye and it contains an ultraviolet filter that provides protection to the eye.

Currently we use ICL's from the STAAR Surgical Company, the company that manufactures ICL. The Toric ICL is only a variant which corrects your nearsightedness as well as your astigmatism (cylindrical power) in one single procedure.

All ICL's are custom made to meet the needs of each individual eye, after measurements and data are taken and sent to the manufacturing company. This type of lens implant has been available internationally for over 12 years.

The implant does not treat presbyopia (difficulty with reading in people 40 and older), but you can use reading glasses as needed after receiving the ICL.

Refractive Lens Exchange

Lens replacement surgery also can correct myopia (nearsightedness), but generally it is not recommended when LASIK, PRK or Phakic IOLs are available.

The procedure for refractive lens exchange is virtually identical to cataract surgery. The difference is that in RLE, the lens being replaced is clear, rather than a cloudy lens due to a cataract.

As in cataract surgery, three types of IOLs are available to replace your natural lens, depending on your vision needs and the health of your eyes. They are:

  • Monofocal fixed-focus IOLs. Monofocal lenses provide clear vision at distance, intermediate or near ranges - but not all three at once. Toric IOLs to correct astigmatism also are classified as monofocal IOLs.

  • Multifocal IOLs. A multifocal lens provides clear vision at multiple distances.

  • Accommodating IOLs. An accommodating IOL is a type of monofocal lens that enables focus at multiple distances by shifting its position in the eye.

With intraocular lenses, there is no "one size fits all," and your eye surgeon will recommend an IOL that is most suitable for your individual needs.

What is Keratoconus?

As light enters the eye, it is refracted, or bent, by the outside shape of the cornea. The curvature of cornea helps to determine how well our eye can focus on object on to the retina.

In Keratoconus, this curvature takes the shape of a cone slowly with progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea leading to visual distortion.

It can occur in one or both eyes and often occur in person's teen or early 20s.

What are the symptoms of Keratoconus?
  • Glare

  • Haloes/ starburst/ghosting of images

  • Multiple images

  • Blurred vision

  • Eyestrain, irritation, itching and excessive eye rubbing

  • Headache

What are the treatment options available?
  • Spectacles (For milder stage with stable conditions)

  • Contact lenses (For milder stage with stable conditions)

  • INTACS Implants (For Progressive conditions)

  • C3R (For Progressive conditions)

  • Corneal transplant/ Keratoplasty ( for Very Advanced Stages)

What is C3R?

C3R is collagen cross linking is a non invasive strengthening procedure in which medicine drops are applied on the cornea and then activated with Ultraviolet light. This helps in reducing the bulging of the cornea.

Early diagnosis and treatment will help you keep your vision.

Comprehensive eye checkup , Fundus Fluorescein Angiogram and OCT aid in assesing vascular abnormalities and macular status.

According to the assesment treatment varies from intraviteal injection of anti VEGFs to macular grid and focal laser and panretinal photocoagulation.
