They are available in three models. The original B-type, Micro "B" and the MMC (Asia) F50 are all 2-inch (50mm) full-bore valves. The Mini Micro "B" is 1 1/2-inch (38mm). MMC's Flexi-Dip Tank Sampling System is available in two varieties: the Fixed-In-Place (FIP) version designed for use with MMC's unique S series vapor control valves with built-in sampling ports, and the Portable-In-Place (PIP) version designed for use with any standard MMC vapor control valve. Both Flexi-Dip systems are made entirely in the USA by MMC.

1. Fixed-In-Place (FIP) VersionThe Flexi-Dip Fixed-In-Place (FIP) sampling system, valve and "closed" sampling tape are shown above, left. Above, right is the unique MMC Model MBS fixed-in-place vapor-control valve with its built-in sampling port. The S series of valves (including BS, MBS and MMBS) are simple to install, easy to keep clean and convenient to use. The valves and Flex-Dip FIP system will support the collection of 1/2- and 1/3-liter samples. (2" Model MBS and BS valves for 1/2-liter sampler and 1 1/2" Model MMBS valve for 1/3-liter sampler).

The FIP system, valve and sampling tape is a gas-tight system. When its closed tape is attached to any S series valve, it can extract and bottle a sample in place without exposing the sample to the atmosphere. The sample bottle twists off easily for capping, labeling and transportation to the lab.

Designed to meet or exceed all existing vapor-control regulations, the system is totally gas-tight. It employs a unique vapor return hose assemly which directs the sample bottle's vapors back to the tape housing to maintain the system's gas-tight intregity.

The Flexi-Dip FIP sampling system also includes a sturdy, molded plastic carrying case for convenient transportation and safe storage with a spare battery and instruction manual. Laboratory grade, non-breakable sampling bottles are also available along with convenient sample bottle carrying racks for 4, 6, 8 or 12 bottles.

2. Portable-In-Place (PIP) Self-Contained Version

The Flexi-Dip Portable-In-Place (PIP) Self-Containedsampling system (below, left) is designed for use with a wide range of standard MMC vapor-control valves such as the B, MB, MMB and U/B units (below, right). It has a sampling valve built into the base of its barrel to make it a totally self-contained sampling unit.

Once the self-contained sampling system with its built-in sampling valve is attached to any existing MMC vapor-control valve, it can extract and bottle a sample in place without exposing the sample to the atmosphere.

Like its sister FIP version, the PIP sampling system is gas-tight and designed to meet or exceed all existing vapor-control regultions. The system also features a unique vapor return hose assembly which routes the sample bottle's vapors back to the tape housing to maintain the system's gas-tight integrity. The MMC Flexi-Dip Oxygen Sensor Gauging Tape is a battery-operated electronic system featuring the latest in solid-state circuitry and an easy-to-view LCD readout panel. A built-in auto-calibration feature allows the unit to automatically calibrate to 20.9%. It offers a fast, safe and convenient method for measuring oxygen content within the ullage space of a closed tank--the space between the top of the tank and the liquid cargo below. The precise measurement of void space oxygen levels is a crucial consideration for petroleum-carrying vessels which blanket their liquid cargos with inert gas to prevent combustion and explosion. In order to maintain the proper inert gas conditions aboard tanker ships, oxygen levels must be minimized and, according to U.S. Coast Guard regulations in the United States, monitored and documented.

The Flexi-Dip Oxygen Sensor Gauging Tape system measures the oxygen level without aspiration and its associated cumbersome sampling hose and weighted head piece. The operator can auto-calibrate the tape before it is inserted into the vapor-control valve and locked in place. Then the valve is opened and the tape sensor is lowered either one meter below deck level or to 50% of ullage space level. The digital LCD display in the hub of the device indicates the percentage of oxygen present. If the oxygen content exceeds 8% of the inert gas level in ullage space, audio and visual warning alarms in the unit are triggered.

Standard Closed (FIPS) Sampling SystemThe Flexi-Dip (FIPS) system is designed for use with a wide range of standard MMC vapor-control valves such as the B, MB, MMB and F/C50 styles. The system is specifically designed for applications areas where the escape of tank vapors during gauging or sampling is prohibited.

Once the (FIPS) sampling system is attached to any existing MMC vapor-control valve, it can extract a sample in place but then requires valve closure, removal from the valve and manual dumping of the collected product. Standard sounding and tank bottom dryness checks can also be performed by attaching sampling bobs to the snap hook on the tape end header.

2. Flexi-Dip RESTRICTED Sampling Tape Systems (Minimal Gas Leakage)

Flexi-Dip Restricted Sampling Tape systems are available for use with MMC's various vapor-control valves. Each Flexi-Dip Sampling Tape comes complete with tape with snap hook, 1/2 liter sampler and Std. API brass bob.

Restricted tapes are designed for manual sample collection, sounding and tank bottom dryness checking. Similar to the FIPS system, once the Restrictedsampling unit is attached to any existing MMC vapor-control valve, it can extract a sample in place but then requires valve closure, removal from the valve and manual dumping of the collected product. Gauging Station Specifications:

1. MB, 2", 150#

Standard Gauging and 1/2 Liter Sampling Station. This positive-type shut-off valve allows gauging with UTI or UI tapes, or fixed-in place permanent gauging/sampling stations with "BS" or "MBS" type positive shut-off valves with built-in sampling port.

2. MBXF, 2", 150#

Variable Height and Flange Size Gauging Station. This version has all the features of the "MB" type above but is built to custom specification for flange type and size. The valve top refence plane height (min. 7"), can be fabricated for an even and fixed addition to a storage tank's existing strapping table.

3. GPSXF, 2"

Gauging Pipe Station, With Custom Flange Mounting. This simple modification of the "MBXF" type is suitable for applications where the positive shut-off of a tank gauging port is not required. It can accommodate any of MMC's gauging tapes with 1/2 liter sampling by means of MMC's standard portable sampler tapes of the PIP variety.

4. GPST-2

Gauging Pipe Station, for Pipe Threaded Mounting. This gauging and sampling fixture is the simplest type available. It can be installed into a field-prepared 2" pipe threaded hole in an existing gauging port cover. It can also be pipe-coupling mounted on an available tank-top pipe entry of at least 1 1/2" diameter.

5. GPSB-2

Gauging Pipe Station, for Temporary Purposes. This special version is used with owner-supplied mounting support, in situations where only periodic tank contents audit measurements are required. It can also be used for periodic verification of fixed tank level measument systems' accuracy. Other non-permanent fixtures can be custom designed upon request.

6. GSSC-24
Gauging Station with Swing-Open Cover, for Other than 1/2 Liter Sampling. Designed to perform any of the permanent-type fixture functions, this unit was specifically intended for open gauging applications where large sample volumes (1-2 liters) are required as a single dip operation. The opening diameter of the pipe structure from the mounting flange base to the swing away cover is 4". The swing-away cover is easily opened with ordinary handtools, by turning two brass cam locks to their open position, and rotating away the top works. The standard flange mounting base is 4", 150# size. Other flange sizes and types are available upon request.

Tank Overflow and High Level Alarm Systems

MMC's Self-Testing High and Overflow Alarm Systems provide an effective means for monitoring critical internal tank conditions at both industrial and maritime facilities. Approved by Factory Mutual as intrinsically safe for hazardous environments, the piezo electric crystal units can be used with a wide range of tanked industrial fluids. Standard probes are provided for use with non-corrosive materials, while stainless steel versions are available for use with chemicals and corrosives. All sensors are designed for "self testing" by the unique and intelligent circuits of each individual station annunciator module.

Each monitored level consists of a sensor probe, Zener safety barrier and annunciator module. Separate power supplies and horns are provided for HIGH and OVERFLOW systems. The standard HIGH and OVERFLOW power supplies can handle up to 20 annunciator and probe combinations. The systems share common "fluid level" and "station fault" alarms as well as a common control cabinet and safety barrier compartment.

Each station module gives an immediate indication of tank conditions with the individual stations' split-legend-push-button-acknowledge switch lighting up with either an "above" or "below" fluid level alert. When an alarm condition occurs, the red "above" legend begins to flash rapidly and a local horn sounds until the condition is acknowledged. After acknowledgement, the flashing red legend goes to steady on and remains on until the condition is corrected. At that time, the local horn is also silenced. When the situation is corrected or the fluid level drops below a pre-set limit, the amber colored "below" legend is steadily lighted.

Station and sensor faults are similarly announced with flashing red LED indicators and an intermittent horn of a different tone.

All systems are built in strict accordance with the latest U.S. Coast Guard regulations and have received American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) system installation approval.

Along with the audible and visual alarms, each system comes ready to accept a customer-supplied emergency power source. Each system is also configured to support optional functions including remote alarm horns, strobe lights and local deck alarm horn silencer switches.

Standard input power is 115 V (AC), 60HZ, 3 amps. 220 V (AC) is available as an option. The units support (customer-supplied) emergency power input of 115 V (AC) or +24 DC.

The flange-mounted probe is installed in the first compartment (contaminated return) of the inspection tank. There, the interface probe continuously monitors a predetermined oil/water interface level in the inspection tank or in a tank of any shape or size.

Visual and audible alarm signals are provided for local and/or remote response modes. Control box relay pick-offs are available to automatically actuate pumps, valves and other control instrumentation.

C-L Flange Couplings with internal O-ring seals and cam-lock features provide a quick, secure flange connection for hoses. They are available in ratchet and non-ratchet-lock configurations. SMEC Automation handles MMC International Corporation ptoducgts. Lubricating oil is inherently hydroscopic--or naturally prone to the absorption of moisture. It will eventually absorb the same amount of relative humidity as the surrounding free air. Ordinarily, oil and water will also separate except in turbulence or in an emulsified state. And this is the water that MMC Clarifier-Coalescers are designed to remove.

In a single pass, these systems will extract over 99% of the free water present in the lubricating oil. Water and solid contaminants are eliminated via inexpensive and easily replaceable cartridge-type elements. Each of these units is designed to operate most efficiently at oil temperatures between 120° F and 150° F. (Below 120° F a heating element may be required.)

In addition to processing lubricating oil, the Lube Oil Clarifier-Coalescers can also be used on other hydrocarbons such as hydraulic fluid, jet fuel and vegetable oil that must be cleared of solid contaminants and free water.

In addition, special adaptor barrels are available to convert other makers' vapor-control valves in a manner that allows those valves to be used with MMC closed or restricted tank gauging and sounding equipment. All adaptor barrels are constructed and factory tested to insure that no change to an existing ZERO ULLAGE REFERENCE will occur when reading cargo level with the supplied adaptor.

MMC also offers an assortment of additional gauging and sampling accessories such as pressure gauges for inert gas measurement, custom-made sounding bobsand rods, gas sampling hoses, gas sampling heads, tank bottom and zone samplers.

Custom-made sample bottle attachments are available for use with MMC's unique "gas-tight" product sampling system. Users seeking to meet the sensitive requirements of "Reid Vapor Pressure" measurements can replace MMC's standard 1-liter sampling bottle with a more appropriate container of their choice, or use a custom-made sample bottle and adaptor.

SMEC Automation handles MMC International Corporation products. MMC deck covers for Butterworth openings are simply dropped into deck opening, then each of three helical cams is rotated one half turn to secure the unit to the deck. A self-contained, renewable O-ring gasket assures a pressure-tight seal. The overall result is a secure, oil- and water-tight closure. An MMC deck cover can be closed or opened in seconds without need for special tools.

Installation requires no drilling or doubler rings and no deck studs, nuts or gaskets. MMC Deck Covers are supplied in accordance with the ship's deck thickness. They are constructed of Navy-grade bronze with standard Buna-n seals. Other seal and cover materials are optional. Wider seal "L"-shaped gaskets are also available for use with unusually weathered deck opening surfaces.

MMC also offers valve-mount deck covers that facilitate the installation of an MMC 2" flanged "B" vapor valve in an existing 12 1/2" diameter tanker deck opening. Constructed of bronze and stainless steel, the 4-cam valve-mount deck covers can easily be removed for tank mucking operations. They are available with a heavy O-ring or an "L" shaped deck seal.

 

The valve units can be used for cargo tank gauging, tank dryness checking and cargo sampling with closed or restricted sampling systems.

MMC's Centalock deck cover fits flush to the deck surface and uses a convenient lift-and-turn handle to lock or loosen the plate. No tools are required for opening or closing. A sturdy three-prong spider-and-cam mechanism under the cover ensures a fast, tight fit. The high-strength bronze spider clamp assemply is actuated by a stainless steel acme threaded handle-clamping spider screw.

 

The cover unit is manufacturered of Navy-grade bronze with standard Buna-n seals. Other seal and cover materials are optional.
