A pelvis avulsion fracture is a break in the pelvis bone caused by a strong muscular contraction pulling a chunk of bone away from it's attachment point. This most commonly occurs at the ischial tuberosity where the hamstrings attach or the AIIS at the front where the Rectus Femoris attaches.

Symptoms of a Pelvic Avulsion Fracture

  • Sudden pain during activity, usually during a powerful movement.
  • Pain at the back of the pelvis in the crease of the buttock may be an ischial tiberosity avulsion fracture.
  • Pain at the front of the hip where the bone can be felt may be an ASIS (anterior superior iliac spine) avulsion fracture.
  • Weakness into hip extension and knee flexion (for ischial tuberosity injuries).
  • Weakness into hip flexion and knee extension for ASIS injuries.

The pain will gradually get worse and the area on the outside of the hip is tender when pressing in. Pain may also radiate down the outside of the thigh.

Groin Strain

Get Latest Price

  • A groin strain is a tear or rupture to any one of the adductor muscles on the inside of the thigh. Symptoms include a sudden sharp pain and depending on how bad the groin strain is swelling and bruising may occur. There are five adductor muscles, the pectineus, adductor brevis and adductor longus (called short adductors which go from the pelvis to the thigh bone) and the gracilis andadductor magnus (long adductors which go from the pelvis to the knee).
  • A rupture or tear in the muscle usually occurs when sprinting, changing direction or in rapid movements of the leg against resistance such as kicking a ball. This is especially likely if a thorough warm-up has not been undertaken first! Repetitive overuse of the groin muscles may result in adductor tendinopathy.
