Injuries sustained during sports and sports resembling activities like injuries due to bike slip, during dance, twisting, jumping, running and accidental injuries. This could lead to injuries like Ligament Tears, TA Rupture, Shoulder Dislocation, Cartilage Injuries and Meniscus Tear etc.
Types of Sports Injuries
Bursitis
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa or sac of fluid which is located in a joint between a tendon and bone. It lubricates and reduces friction. When it becomes inflamed, it swells up and painful. Common sports injuries involving bursa include Knee bursitis, Elbow bursitis, Trochantic bursitis at the hip and Subacromial bursitis in the shoulder.
Tendonitis
Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon which joins muscle to the bone. They can become inflamed through over use where the injury will come on gradually, or tendonitis can occur following a strain or tear of a muscle which is not allowed to rest and heal properly.
Strains
A strain is the term given to a tear in a muscle or tendon. It is graded 1, 2 or 3 depending on how worst they are. A grade 1 muscle strain may be just a few fibers torn whereas a grade 3 is a severe or complete muscle rupture.
Fractures
A fracture is a broken bone. There are many different types of fractures depending on how the bone breaks including spiral, greenstick, oblique, transverse and avulsion which is where a tendon pulls a small part of the bone away.
Stress fractures
A stress fracture is a hairline crack or very thin fracture in the bone caused by repetitive forces and over use. A stress fracture of the shin bone is a common sports injury. Stress fractures will often not show up initially on an X-ray but it can become worse due to overuse.
Sprain
A sprain is an injury or tear to ligaments which connects bone to bone. Like strains a sprain can be graded 1, 2 or 3 depending on severity with a grade 3 sprain being a complete or almost complete rupture of the ligament. Ligament sprains are common in sports injuries particularly at the knee joint and the ankle joint.

The injuries caused due to improper or overuse of a certain part of our body like tennis elbow, muscle sprains, shoulder pain, knee pain, backache and other overuse injuries are treated at SportsMed.
Tendonitis
- There are two ways of injuring a tendon. It is due to either an acute, traumatic incident where the tendon tears, either partially or fully (e.g. Achilles tendon rupture). Or via an overuse injury which gradually develops over time. This is often referred to as Tendonitis.
- Treatment of all of these overuse tendon injuries will follow a very similar pattern. Whilst the initial treatment may aim to reduce pain, stiffness and swelling, in order to completely correct the problem. It includes, rest from any activities which aggravate the condition and Applying cold therapy to ease pain and swelling/inflammation. A therapist may use sports massage to relax the muscle. They may also apply a technique known as 'frictions' to the tendon to initiate the healing process and may also use electrotherapeutic treatments such as ultrasound.
