ED coating plants

Cathode Electro Deposition is most advanced and environment-friendly Water-based coating to be done on metal components. A combination of dip and spray ensures the reach of paint at every corner of a component having an intrinsic shape as well. CED is chemically resistant, mechanically durable, and pleasant in appearance having very Good Salt Spray life and is sought for by all automobile users.

Electro - deposition coating (ed coating plants)

Electro-deposition of primer coating has become universal for a modern automotive paint shop. In ED, charged particles from the paint emulsion move to Anode (AED) or Cathode (CED) under electrical forces. The direct current established through the bath makes the pigment and resin base of the paint wander towards the body surfaces. Coating reaches all the recessed area. The deposited film does not re-dissolve. However, the un-deposited material is rinsed. Ultra filtrate (UF) types of equipment are used for ED paint ingredients separation of those not forming film and recovery of Paints. Deposited film after stoving becomes hard, durable polymeric film.

Customers today demand higher quality and durability from the products they buy. Not only do they expect these products to perform well, but they want the finish to look good and resist corrosion for a much longer period of time. This finishing processes is designed which is called as electro coating (E-coating).

E-coating is a method of painting which uses electrical current to deposit the paint. The process works on the principal of "Opposites Attract". This process is also known as Electro Deposition (ED).

Cathodic Electro Deposited coating is used extensively in the automotive industry. In this process, the component after phosphate pre-treatment is dipped in the bath of E-coat chemicals and given an electric charge. The coating gets deposited on the component and then it is removed from the bath, washed and then baked.


A complete E-coat system consists of the following

  • Pre-treatment line
  • E-coat line
  • Material handling system
  • Oven

This technology gives an organic finish on metal part/component by electrically depositing paint on it.


It also requires the following auxiliary equipment:

  • Hot water generator
  • RO water system
  • DI water system
  • Laboratory
  • Effluent treatment plant


Coatec India can supply the entire system on turnkey basis. Coatec India can also supply the complete system in modules depending upon the need of the customer. 

Pre treatment line will consist of the following stages: 
  • Knock off degreasing
  • Degreasing
  • Water rinse
  • Water rinse
  • Activation
  • Phosphating
  • Water rinse
  • Recirculated DI water rinse
  • DI water rinse
  • It will also have circulation, heating, filtration etc, wherever required.


The Ecoat line will consist of the following stages:

  • Ecoat

It will also have prefiltration, ultrafiltration, chiller, rectifier and anolyte system.


Material Handling
For the SME segment the programmable hoist type system is the most economical. This is also popularly called the transporter system or the transporter wagon. The products duly loaded on the jig are carried from one tank to the other in a pre-programmed sequence and pre-defined time. For mass produced similar products, conveyor system is more suitable. 

Baking oven
The oven can be electric, diesel or gas fired. The diesel or gas fired ovens are with stainless steel heat exchanger or direct fired. Forced convection is a must for the oven. The auxiliary equipment is available from a large number of sources.

To be able to design a system, the following information is required:

  • Size of the component
  • Surface area of the component
  • Weight of the component
  • Number of components to be coated per hour
  • Number of working hours per day

In some cases, simply the tank size, the expected surface area per batch, weight per batch and the number of batches per hour is also enough.


Depending upon a component's coating requirement, Coatec recommends appropriate technologies. Some technology areas of profiency with Coatec are outlined in this section.
This technology gives a metal part or a component with an organic finish by electrically depositing paint on it. This works on the simple principle of 'Opposites Attract'.
