With almost 90 % of the world's float glasses are formed using the float method. This method produces glass with extremely flat and parallel surfaces. Float glass finds innumerable application in commercial and residential construction, automotive industry and serves several specialty applications like mirror manufacturing. Float glass is made from a 'batch' consisting of silica sand, soda and lime. In the initial float process, these materials are digitally weighed and mixed with cullet - crushed, recycled glass, which is left over from previous float cycles.

Other materials like metals and metal oxides in small amounts may be added to tint the glass. The processing includes the conveyor transferring the batch mixture into the batch house. From there, the mix is continuously fed into the furnace with an approx temperature of 2800°F, where it melts. From the furnace, the molten mixture moves through a canal, onto a pool of liquid tin. As this tin has higher specific gravity than the glass ribbon, its edges helping to control both, its width and its speed. The speed at which this glass ribbon moves determines the final thickness of the cooled glass. Here specialized metallic oxide coatings like low-emissive or reflective coatings are applied to the 'atmosphere' surface of the glass, as required. This coating improves its performance or enhances its appearance. The online coating process is called Chemical Vapour Deposition and these coatings are called Pyrolytic or 'hard' coats. The molten glass is cooled to approximately 1100°F and it progresses through the tin bath, finally reaching a solid state. The float glass is cooled slowly or 'annealed' to remove any residual stresses. Once annealing is done, the solidified ribbon of float glass is processed and cut into pieces.

The cooled float glass passes through a series of inspection booths for assuring that it has the uncompromising quality needed. Defects if any, are marked and the rough edges where knurls pulled the glass through the molten tin are trimmed. The remaining glass ribbon is cut for packaging. Float glasses can be cut into large standard sheets or cut to size, according to client’s demand or as per application. The glass is then stored, packed and shipped. The basic principal employed in heat treating process of tempered glass is to create an initial condition of surface and edge compression. This condition of surface and edge compression is achieved by first heating the glass and then cooling the surfaces rapidly. This leaves the center glass thickness and forces the surfaces and edges into compression.

The “heat –treatment” process has application of a rapid air quench immediately upon withdrawal of hot (approx. at 1200° F ) glass from the “tempering furnace”, as its key element. The immediate and sustained application of air quench produces the temper. The air direction against hot glass from several fixed, reciprocation or rotating blast nozzles, extracts heat uniformly from both surfaces (uneven heat extraction may produce bow or warp). It is also required to sustain the quench long enough so as to prevent reheating of the glass surface from the still-hot glass core. A quenched condition becomes stable as the glass is reduced to a 400-600 °F approx.

The tempered glasses are used in place of other glass products in application requiring increased strength and reduced likelihood of injury in the event of breakage. Buildings, motor vehicle and certain manufacturing industries make use of fine tempered glass because they are effective and economical and serve a range of application. Tempered glass is also used for doors , side lights, shower and tub enclosure and in interior partitions. They are ideal for storm doors, Patio –door assemblies and stairway balustrades. As a glazing product, tempered glass is used in windows and in spandrel areas, sloped glazing, racquetball courts, skylights and solar panels. The industrial usage of tempered glass in seen in refrigerators, furniture, ovens, shelving, and fireplace screens.

We offer insulated glass, a prefabricated unit made of two or more glass panes that have been separated by an air gap and edge-sealed together. All material like aluminium spacers, corner keys, desiccants and sealants are 100% imported and are of international standards. The aluminium spacers are cut to size, filled with desiccant and joined at the edges in the form of a frame. Further, the primary sealant butyl (polyisobutalyne) is applied to the edges and made ready to be incorporated in the assembly.

 

The glasses are dried on the computerized manufacturing line and conveyed to the assembly for last inspection and assembled with aluminium spacer in which primary sealant has already been applied. The assembly is pressed and conveyed to the applicator table for applying the secondary sealant. Suitable time for curing is allowed before final cleaning, packing and transportation.

 

Advantages:


  • Prevention of Dew Condensation: With monolithic glass, the temperature difference between outside and inside of a room will often lead to the condensation. The insulating effect of the air layer makes it difficult for the glass to become cold and is consequently harder for dew condensation.
  • Retards Sound Transmission: Insulating glass can significantly save on exterior noise pollution. The amount of sound reduction depends on the combination of the insulating glass. Using one of the panes as laminated glass will drastically reduce sound transmission.
  • Pleasant Room Temperature: These glass offer increased personal comfort and aids in energy conservation. Its high insulation properties and the lack of cold or warm droughts lead to a pleasant internal environment.

  • Lends high standard of finish to the building.

We also offer glass in its basic form, as coated glass wherein the coating is done during the float glass manufacturing process. These basic coated glasses are commonly marketed as solar control glass. The different types of coatings we offer are:

 

Hard Coating or Pyrolytic Coatings: These are very durable and ideally suitable coatings for further processing like tempering, heat -strengthening, laminating, insulating etc.

 

Soft Coating: This is a form of metallic coating done in a vacuumed atmosphere. Multiple coatings can be applied to the glass for better thermal performance along with a variety of color options. Soft coated glass cannot be tempered after coating and it needs to be protected inside a double glazing or laminated environment.

 

Medium Coating: Soft coating with additional protective coating known as Medium Coating. This coat enables glass to be processed further. It has the thermal performance of soft coated glass but allows tempering after coating and can also be single gazed with the coated sides exposed to the interiors only.

 

Solar Reflective Glass: This variety consists of a layer of clear or colored float glass coated with a thin layer of metal oxide on the one side. Solar reflective glass has the ability to reflect and absorb part of the solar radiation. Due to the coating of metal oxides on the glass, solar reflective glass is widely applied not only as a sunlight protective glass but also as an aesthetic product in architecture. Its highly reflective surface and its wide palette of colors make it a preferred choice. An exceptional property of our solar reflective glass is that the coating of metal oxides on the glass can be achieved without affecting the transparency of glass. Hence, the glass can be used in a number of combination to enhance its performance.

 

Low E Glass is an innovatively coated glass, which prevents heat from escaping during the winter and reduces the amount of the heat entering a building in the summer. It is used widely in residential, commercial and industrial applications. Same as solar reflective glass, low-emissivity glass (low-e glass.) relies on special coating to achieve its high performance. The low-e coating allows for exceptionally high visible light transmission up to 70% and can substantially reduce the heat gain within a building.

Our heat strengthened glasses are produced in the same manner as toughened safety glass. The only difference is that the cooling process is slower in this. The heat strengthened glass is generally twice as strong as annealed glass and has more resistance to heat fracture. The glass is subject to greater wind load and has its own distinguished features. When heat strengthened glass breaks the fragments are larger pieces and they tend to stay intact in an opening until replaced. This attribute makes heath strengthened glass very useful in high rice spandrel and above ground floor panels because in case of breakage the fragments do not fall into the ground below. The heat strengthened glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge worked. The glass also facilitates lesser visual distortion.

 

During heat strengthening, glass is reheated to a high temperature, and then cooled quickly - the “quenching” process. This results in heat-strengthened glass, which is twice as strong as annealed glass of equal thickness. These glasses offer significantly greater resistance to wind loads, impacts, and thermal loads. Heat strengthening does not result in a “safety “ glass product rather heat-strengthened glass breaks in a similar pattern to that of annealed glass.

 

Our heat-strengthened glasses are marketed under brand SIGTuff. These are perfect for many commercial applications such as spandrels, windows in high wind load areas, and applications where the glass is expected to develop high thermal stresses.
