Steam is the oldest and most common sterilization process used in medical and related applications. Its proven effectiveness is further enhanced by being both reliable and economical. In this process, the item to be sterilized is placed in a chamber, e.g. an Autoclave. The item is exposed to a combination of heat and saturated steam (water vapor) for an established period of time. This process kills the micro-organisms present, sterilizing the item. Tempilinks are most commonly used in producing Type 1 and Type 2 (e.g. Bowie-Dick test packs) indicators. Tempilinks have also been used as elements to help create Type 4 and other types of chemical indicators.

Tempil® inks are specialized inks which are used in the medical field for sterilization indication purposes. Tempil inks usually contains 50 – 70% solids.  These are active ingredients which gives color change in solid states under either steam, gas (ethylene oxide or formaldehyde), plasma, dry heat, radiation process.

Tempil Ink is of 2 types: Water based and Solvent Based.

Ethylene Oxide is considered the most universal sterilant. It may be used for sterilization of most medical devices. Materials that are heat and moisture sensitive, or sensitive to the chemical used in other sterilants, often have no issue with Ethylene Oxide. It is the second most common sterilization process in medical applications, due to this effectiveness. Tempilinks are most commonly used in producing Type 1 process indicators. They may also be used as elements to help create other Types of chemical indicators.

Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide is a newer form of sterilization used in medical applications. This process works at lower temperatures than steam, making it an alternative for items damaged by heat. Items must be checked for compatibility with the Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide, as some materials, such as nylon, can become brittle and unusable after exposure. Tempilinks are most commonly used in producing Type 1 process indicators. They may also be used as elements to help other Types of chemical indicators.
