Electro Chlorinators
Concept of Electro Chlorinator System is an electrolysis process wherein either natural seawater or an artificial brine solution (fresh water salt) is converted into sodium hypochlorite solution. Salt is composed of sodium and chloride. When DC (direct current) is passed through titanium electrodes to the electrolyte, the chlorides will disassociate to form chlorine. The process is basically as follows:
- Electrolysis occur in an undivided cell when a DC current is passed through a saline water solution (e.g. seawater or brine solution)
- At the anode: Oxidation of chloride ions to produce chlorine (Cl2)
- At the cathode: Reduction of water to produce sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen (H2)
- Liberated chlorine reacts with the sodium hydroxide to produce sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) instantaneously
The overall reaction, sustained by electrical energy, is as follows:
- 2NaCl (salt) H2O (water) →
- NaOCl (hypo) NaCl (salt) H2(hydrogen)
- Produce Cl2 in the form of sodium hypochlorite

This is a simple and proven technology to convert sea water, by means of electrolysis into 1st grade sodium hypochlorite (ELECTRO HYPO) using hypochlorite generator (electro chlorinator system). It is always applied on-site, at the Point of Application. No chemicals are used throughout the process. Sea water is fed through an electrolyser cell (electrochlorinator). When a low voltage DC current is applied, electrolysis occurs and sodium hypo chlorite (NaOCl) is generated instantaneously. Sodium Hypochlorite is generated between 0.2% and 0.8% depending on the application. Below 1%, hypo is classified as a non-hazardous chemical although still a very effective bio growth destroyer. The only by-product, hydrogen, is safely vented into the atmosphere.

Tiaano® Electro Chlorination Portable system is manufactured and supplied as a turn-key solution, only the tubing for the water connection have to be installed. Tiaano® Electro Chlorination Portable units comprise the Electrolyzer and Pulse dozer. Additional equipment which are required is reaction tank, storage tank for the storage of generated hypo solution, level indicator, dosing pumps and acid wash system. The size of the storage tank depends on the space available and the amount of NaClO buffers to rage required. The sizing of the reaction tank also depends on capacity of the system and the salt filling is to be by manual.

Process Overview
The generation of available chlorine from brine solution / seawater as diluted Hypochlorite solution is carried out using Tiaano® electro chlorination system.
The process is based on the partial electrolysis of sodium chloride contains in seawater. Which enters into the Electrolyser, equipped with electrodes energized under direct anodic and cathodic current. In this condition the aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCI), which is totally dissociated as Na* and CI, reacts at the anode to generate free chlorine according to the reaction.

While at the cathode hydrogen evolves with formation of OH ions.
2H* + 2e → H2
Successive chemical reaction takes place in the brine among the products of the electrolysis the OH ions migrate from the cathodic area and react with Na+ and CI near the anode producing sodium Hypochlorite NaoCI.
This overall chemical reaction can be express as follows:

1. Hypo Hood with vertical dip type electrolyzer:
i. Due to the electrochemical reaction, cathode will produce hydrogen, it pass through hypo hood – it leads the hydrogen uplift action.

Salt and electricity generates pure chlorine solution in a safe, simple and cost effective way to disinfect pools. Recommended operating conditions of the pool is:
Eatable Salt (sodium chloride) range of 2 to 6 grams per liter, average 4 Gpl that is 0.4% (less than 12% of sea water. Pool temperature should be15-40°C, stabilizer levels of 30-50 ppm for outdoor facilities.
When the electrodes is energized by DC current, the catalyst react with the sodium chloride and water molecules at the anode and cathode surfaces to generate the chlorine disinfectant in the form of hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite in the pool water. When the chlorine kills the pathogens and oxidizes organics or contaminants, chlorine remains returns to the native state as salt (NaCl) in water as a recycling process.
