Platinum is conductive, chemically stable and highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion. It has a silvery-gray color and can be polished to a variety of finishes. Because of its high conductivity and low consumption rate, Platinum is an excellent anode material. Due to its high cost, Platinum is made practical for use by electroplating a thin layer over a high corrosion resistance substrate. Since Titanium, Niobium and Tantalum substrates are having the ability to form an insulating oxide film under anodic conditions, they are all most commonly used as anode in ICCP. The platinized Titanium mesh or sheet anodes comes with a stem are suspended in plating baths with the mesh portion immersed in the electroplating solution.

The electroplating process consists of the immersion of an object to be coated in a bath containing an anode. The object itself functions as the cathode. The bath is usually an aqueous solution of salts of the metal to be deposited. An electrolytic cell is produced when voltage is applied to the anode. The cathode being negative. Metal ions formed in the solution are attracted to the cathode where they gain electrons and deposit out of the solution onto the cathode surface as pure metal.

How Electroplating Works (Electrodes - Platinised Cylindrical Anode or Platinised Cylindrical Cathode

Electroplating is the application of electrolytic cells in which a thin layer of metal is deposited onto an electrically conductive surface. A cell consists of two electrodes (conductors), usually made of Titanium with Platinum plating, which are held apart from one another. The electrodes are immersed in an electrolyte (a solution).

When an electric current is turned on, positive ions in the electrolyte move to the negatively charged electrode, called the cathode. Positive ions are atoms with one electron too few. When they reach the cathode, they combine with electrons and lose their positive charge.

At the same time, negatively charged ions move to the positive electrode, called the anode. Negatively charged ions are atoms with one electron too many. When they reach the positive anode, they transfer their electrons to it and lose their negative charge.

Tiaano manufacturing different sizes and Shapes of platinised Titanium Electrodes for water ionizers. The essential components of the ionization chamber are its two collecting electrodes, (the anode and cathode) the anode is positively charged with respect to the cathode.

A water ionizer works on the simple principle of electrolysis. Any type of water ionizer has two electrodes put into a container having two chambers separated by a semi-permeable membrane. The two electrodes - positive and negative, are put into two separate chambers and the current is passed through them. Ionization process takes place on passing of the current through the electrodes. The dissolved minerals get attracted either to the positive or negative electrode, therefore one of the chambers will have acidic water while the other will have alkaline water. The alkaline water is for drinking purpose, whereas the acidic water is for disinfecting or sterilizing purposes.

Most good ionizers on the market use electrodes made of platinum plated titanium. Titanium will not dissolve in your ionized water as the cheaper metals like stainless steel does. The ionizer uses grade 1 titanium (as per ASTM Standard) electrodes to be plated with a good electrical conductor. Stainless steel was used for Water Ionizer electrodes in the late 1980's and was found not be a suitable material because they did not last more than a  few years.

Anti-fouling (MGPS) process is based on the electrolysis of part of the sodium chlorides (NaCl) contained in seawater. The electrolysis is obtained by passing the seawater through a generating chamber containing electrode (Pt Ti Anode).

Tiaano designed this system to prevent the marine growth to the internal pipe line of ships through the chemical reaction of chlorine compounds which are produced through the electrolysis of seawater.

Seawater contains both micro and macro marine organisms such as sea worm, molluscs, barnacles, algae, hard shells like acorn barnades etc. These organisms stick to the surfaces of the ship and flourish over there, resulting in marine growth.

First, the seawater taken out of the outlet of one of the common seawater pumps, or the pump for exclusive use in MGPS is led into the Generating chamber, in which the seawater is electrolyzed with specially designed electrodes. Then the seawater containing chlorine compounds is injected into scoop or sea chests through the nozzles to mix with the sea water sucked in from outside of the ship, thus preventing marine growths from adhering to the interior of the ship’s sea water line including sea chest, piping and heat exchanger.

Effects of Marine Growth:-

In the most dangerous cases, complete seawater lines can become blocked, affecting the safety and operational capability of the ship, in other instances, the gradual restriction in the flow of seawater through cooling systems can damage engine efficiency, leading to increased fuel usage.

As the marine organisms flourish they block and narrow the passage of cooling water in the ship’s system resulting in the following issues.

Impairing the heat transfer system

Overheating of several water cooled machineries

Increase in the rate corrosion and thinning of pipes.

Reduced efficiency which can lead to loss of vessel speed, increase fuel uses and loss of time.

Platinum is one of the noble group of metals and or also precious metals, all of which are excellent catalyst materials. Platinum is conductive, chemically stable and highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion. It has a silvery-gray color and can be polished to a variety of finishes. The process of platinum plated is electro deposition.

Platinum is an excellent anode material due to its high conductivity and low consumption rate. Due to its high cost, Platinum is made practical for use by electroplating a thin layer over a high corrosion resistance substrate. Since Titanium, Niobium and Tantalum substrates are having the ability to form an insulating oxide film under anodic conditions, they are all most commonly used as anode in ICCP. Among them, Titanium is less expensive; however, it has a much lower breakdown potential than Niobium or Tantalum. The titanium oxide breaks down at anodic potentials in the 12 V range.
