He has been nominated as “International Engineer of the year” in 2007 and 2011 by International Biographical Centre. Dr. Sharma is also the Chairman of International Society for Rock Mechanics(INDIA)  and is VP and Member of Central Board of Irrigation and Power. LUSIP (Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation project) is a poverty alleviation initiative situated in the Swaziland Lowveld, the poorest area of the country. Its goal is to help turn the local economy from small-scale subsistence farming reliant on seasonal rainfall, to sustainable, irrigated agriculture concentrating on sugar plantations.

SWADE, a parastatal organisation managing the project on behalf of the Swaziland government and international financiers, asked Tractebel Engineering to handle the design and construction supervision of the related irrigation scheme.

The project is located on the west bank of the Usuthu River. Phase 1 has focused on developing the bulk water supply infrastructure, the feeder canals leading from the river, the reservoir, three dam walls, the outgoing water supply canals, and the infield irrigation network (6,500 ha).

Our scheme is very simple and efficient, as it works purely on gravity. There are no pumps involved, right up to the point where farmers take water from the balancing dams at the final point of the scheme. A great irrigation feat!

Thanks to the irrigation network, large scale plantations of sugar cane, and perhaps maize, cassava, vegetables or cotton are possible. 15,0000 families will benefit from this development, representing 10 to 15% of the country’s population.

Combined Efforts on Fos and Flevo CCPPs

CombiGolfe, in the French town of Fos-sur-Mer (‘Fos’) and Flevo, near Lelystad (The Netherlands) are two Combined Cycle Power Plants which were recently built for the same client: Electrabel France/The Netherlands. In a Combined Cycle Power Plant, a gas-fired turbine generates electricity. The heat of the gas exiting the turbine is then recovered to produce steam running another turbine that generates additional energy.
This makes CCPPs the most environmentally friendly and most efficient type of thermal power plants. And indeed, Fos and Flevo deliver the highest efficiencies (58%) and operational flexibility in today’s gas turbine technologies!

Tractebel Engineering acted as the Owner’s Engineer for both projects. The contracts were awarded only two months’ apart, both with the same EPC contractor (Alstom). During the design review phase, especially, we were able to fully synergise our efforts with both project teams still working in our Brussels HQ.

However, our engineers faced specific challenges. At the Fos plant for instance, the water naturally cascading at the cooling water output point was creating foam, as sea water and air were coming in contact. What was our solution? Simply to discharge the water more gently into the sea. For the Flevo project, on the other hand, we managed to achieve more than two million working hours without major incidents!

The world’s longest transmission line to be installed is a 600 kV HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) overhead line (OHL) with two circuits. The circuits will run parallel to each other for a stunning 2,375 km, all the way from Porto Velho in the north-west Amazon region to Araraquara, São Paulo in the south-east. What’s more, at 600 kV, this is an Extra High Voltage OHL.

Tractebel Engineering was selected to carry out no less than three contracts related to this ground-breaking project.

The first contract concerns the construction design (plotting the lay-out) of the entire 600 km stretch between the state of Goáis to São Paulo (Transmission Line 1). The section starts deep in the Amazon forest. As environmental regulations forbid the cutting of trees, we must plan extra tall towers of at least 70 m high in order to keep clear of the treetops.

Tractebel engineering is also in charge of the detailed design of the two AC/DC bipolar integration substations required at either end of the Transmission Line (TL) 2 circuit.

We are currently performing the detailed electromechanical design, and the civil and detailed design for the foundations and construction of our TL1 stretch. This will give us the opportunity to study several new and improved technologies.

The Thisvi greenfield project involved the construction of a 421 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant in the municipality of Thisvi-Viota. The plant was built under an EPCM contract awarded to Thisvi JV, a joint venture company between Edison and Aktor.

ElpEdison, the final client, awarded us the Owner’s Engineer (OE) contract as a result of an international tender. Tractebel Engineering was selected primarily on qualification and price. This was the very first time Edison had requested an external OE on a project!

Tractebel Engineering successfully lived up to the great expectations. As in any of our OE assignments, we pointed out possible technical improvements. We suggested, for example, cleaning the piping using nitrogen to drive the pigs (brushes) instead of natural gas (which was delayed). This saved more than two weeks on the schedule. Other interventions, such as dedicating a representative to the client office and maintaining a strong on-site team, were all highly appreciated by ElpEdison.

Tractebel Engineering also fostered a very positive relationship with Edison. The result was a good team effort to ensure the contractual schedule was met. Moreover, all plant performance guarantees were fulfilled and even exceeded!

The award was presented at Noida, India, on October 30, 2013. Tractebel Engineering has been the PMC for GAIL (India) during execution of major pipeline projects in India such as 610 KM Dahej-Vijaipur Pipeline Upgradation Project(DVPL-II), 95 KM Focus Energy Pipeline Project and 540 KM Dahej-Hazira-Uran Gas Pipeline project.

During these years, Tractebel Engineering has set its engineering skills at work for the development of innovative solutions. In DVPL-II project, Tractebel Engineering introduced high grade steel – API 5L PSL2 X80 material – first time in India. This high grade material allowed the usage of pipes with lower thickness, leading to reduction of the overall weight of the steel thereby reducing the cost and brining higher cost efficiencies. This project is considered as a benchmark for the pipeline industry in India. 

Mr. Sanjive Sharma, Vice President (Gas BU) and Mr. Kapil Wadhawan, Addl. General Manager – M&S (Gas & LNG) were present at the occasion to receive the Award.

The tunnel Boring Machine, “Charlotte“, has reached the end of the first of the two tubes forming the 4 km long tunnel of Saverne. “One important strategy followed by Cities of Tomorrow is the ‘Trias Ecologica’ three-step plan which has reached us from the Netherlands. We look at how limitations can be placed on energy so that it also becomes more favorable for the economy. One Dutch high-tech company that employs 7000 people wanted to reduce its energy consumption by 10% and its emissions by 50% over a period of five years. This was an impossible goal without help from outside. But the company was undeterred and went in search of an investor who would concentrate purely on financing the ecological improvement. By tackling an ecological problem in an economic way the company is on track to reach its objective.”

“The second aspect is that we have to find efficient ways of utilizing the waste flows that are otherwise wasted. A good example of this is the K shopping centre in Kortrijk that uses its mini district heating network to transfer excess energy from one shop to another. District heating or cooling is a familiar concept in the Netherlands.

Shanghai Gas (Group) Company, Ltd. has called on Tractebel Engineering to provide expert LNG terminal project management and consulting services for the expansion of the Shanghai Wuhaogou LNG Terminal in Pudong, China.

Tractebel Engineering provides project management assistance, design review and onsite technical assistance for the construction of two new 100,000 m³ LNG tanks and related cryogenic piping, as well as two new submerged combustion vaporizers (SCVs) to increase the terminal’s current storage and regasification capacity. Tractebel Engineering will mobilise an experienced project management and construction team to assist the client team onsite in China for a period of 33 months. They will be fully supported by a multidisciplinary backup team of LNG experts in Brussels, who will be on call to meet the client’s needs in terms of design review and technical assistance throughout the duration of the project.

Meeting China’s growing need in LNG

Chinese gas resources are limited so LNG imported from Malaysia, Indonesia, Qatar and Australia is in high demand and the expansion of LNG terminals in China for this purpose is well underway. The big challenge, however, is how best to go about the design and construction of new facilities in a terminal that must stay operational at all times. As such, Tractebel Engineering’s experience and expert knowledge are vital for Shanghai Gas (Group) Co., Ltd. for the successful expansion of the Shanghai Wuhaogou LNG Terminal. “Tractebel Engineering’s execution and professionalism left us with a deep impression.
