Managing Human Rights at Workplace

Enhanced image leads to business success
Companies who successfully demonstrate  being ethically responsible,  benefit from a wide-ranging increase in the confidence of consumers and investors, increase in customer and employee loyalty;

With ever increasing need to improve working conditions within the organization and the entire supply chain, companies have adopted  private governance of working conditions in the form of SA 8000 Standard.

SA8000 is an international standard to promote worker’s  rights and enable employers to sustainably implement a systems-based approach to ensuring decent and ethical working conditions. This standard is based on the principles of the international human rights norms and national labour law to promote worker’s best interest, with a view to sustainable livelihoods and employment.  It is based on the principle that ensuring worker’s rights and well-being is not a ‘burden’ for employers but an investment in human resources that leads to healthy and sustainable workplace for all.  SA 8000 is the first auditable social standard and is independent of government bodies and single interest groups. This standard is verifiable through evidenced-based process.

SA8000 measures the performance of organisations in eight key areas: child labour, forced and Cumulsory labour, health and safety, freedom of  association and collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours and remuneration.

Benefits of SA 8000

SA8000 certified facilities enjoy a competitive advantage and workers experience concrete benefits. Some of the benefits are detailed below:

  • Enhances company and brand reputation
  • Transparency to Stakeholders
  • Improves employee recruitment, retention and productivity
  • Supports better supply chain management and performance
Certification process

Certification to the SA 8000 requires every facility seeking certification to be audited. Auditors visit factories to assess corporate practice on a wide range of issues and evaluate the state of a company's management systems. A certificate is awarded attesting company’s  compliance to SA 8000. The certificate is a testimony of the organisation's good practice processes and significantly improves workplace conditions. The certification process is a multiple-step process. The certification cycle is described briefly:

  • Application for Certification from client
  • Offer from TUV India
  • Offer Acceptance from client and order confirmation by TUV India
  • Pre-Audit  (Optional )
  • Certification Audit  -  ( Stage 1 + Stage 2)
  • Issue of Certificate on successful completion of Certification Audit
  • Surveillance audits at Six monthly Interval
  • Re-Certification ( after 3 years).

Approach to improving social performance in Supplier Chain

BSCI  is a company driven initiative to implement and create sustainable improvements in social standards in production facilities world

BSCI members come largely from the retail sector, but it is also open to manufacturers and importers. BSCI focuses on monitoring as an ongoing process to improve social standards. Audits are one mechanism in this monitoring system, but the key to real and sustainable improvement is acting in partnership with suppliers to achieve it.

The BSCI and its members follow a positive, non-confrontational approach to compliance and want to heighten supplier's and manufacturer's awareness of their social responsibilities and occupational health and safety issues. The BSCI aims to reward the suppliers' good will and willingness to cooperate.

Assessment Process : The initial audits in the BSCI are conducted in a uniform manner. Standardized questionnaires and evaluation schemes are used for every audit. This ensures fair treatment of all suppliers, and at the same time ensures that the quality of the audit remains at a consistent high level.
