digital printing is based on technology that prints directly from the data of a digital file using electroencephalographic imaging.

typical areas where digital printing is used today are food, pharmaceutical, industrial chemical and special product labelling, multi-language print jobs and personalisation.

the main driving forces for digital printing are:

  • profitable short to medium print runs
  • no films, no plates
  • fast turnaround
  • high-quality prints
  • no waste
  • a wide range of substrates to print on

hp indigo and xeikon - the main press manufacturers

hp indigo and xeikon are the main digital printing press manufacturers in the world today. Both companies were founded in the late 1980s and introduced their first digital colour printing machines in 1993.

hp indigo uses digital offset technology with liquid toners called electroinks. This technology sets high requirements on the printing substrate if good ink anchorage is to be achieved. upm raflatac's hp indigo products have a special topcoat to ensure good print quality.

the personal care industry sets high technical and aesthetic requirements on labels that need to be:

  • conformable and squeezable
  • resistant to water, oils and chemicals
  • assistive in visual differentiation
  • supportive of a strong brand image

upm raflatac’s range of polyethylenes (pes) and polypropylenes (pps) covers the majority of applications.

  • the ‘no-label’ look
clear filmic pp labels on clear or opaque packaging create an excellent no-label look, meaning the label is seamlessly integrated to the package.
  • squeezable packaging
raflex plus is upm raflatac’s own innovation in filmic labelling. This unique polyolefin-based face material combines the conformability and flexibility required for contoured and squeezable packing with high clarity. These are the most valued properties of pe and pp in a single material specially designed for personal care applications.
  • open-closure labelling
an environmentally friendly uv hotmelt adhesive has been developed for combination with a wide range of upm raflatac label face materials for open-closure (resealable) wet wipes labelling.

  • tube labelling
self-adhesive labels can save a lot of production time, keep stocked tube volumes to a minimum and reduce overall costs. Upm raflatac has a special range of materials specifically designed for this demanding area.
  • sensorial effects
upm raflatac's soft touch offers a soft and warm feeling similar to the beautiful soft skin of a baby.

paper or film labels for home care?

upm raflatac has a large range of paper-based label materials for various home care applications. However, to create an optimal brand image, particularly one that’s long-lasting, filmic labels have become the most popular choice on home care products.

safety requirements and certificates

labelling home and personal care products requires specialist face materials and adhesives that meet the requirements of the industry. Upm raflatac's products comply with legislation concerning the presence of any potentially dangerous chemicals.

industrial chemical labelling covers many different applications, including bulk chemicals, oils and paints, and building and agricultural products. Labels for outdoor use in particular require durability, e. G. Water and chemical resistance.

contributing to product safety

in industrial chemical labelling the label also plays an important role in product safety since it identifies products and any possible hazardous components. Recent eu legislation requires manufacturers to classify and label substances and preparations. Bs 5609 sets legal standards for label durability in marine use.

the logistics and transport segment is a rapidly growing end-use area for self-adhesive labels.

  • labels are used for routing, inventory and tracking and tracing. The life of the label is rather short.
  • scratch resistance is the key criterion for labels used in the transport sector.

choosing the right printing technique

  • direct thermal and laser are the main printing techniques for printing variable information.
  • flexography is the main technique used for pre-printing labels in one or two colours.

in the wide variety of pharmaceutical labelling applications, labels may be required to have special properties such as:

  • an adhesive with non-migration properties when labelling on a liquid filled ldep package.
  • tolerance of various sterilisation processes or storage at -80 °c.
  • face materials that are thermal transfer printable.

labelling small-diameter substrates

on small-diameter substrates, such as test tubes, syringes and vials, labelling requires special attention, especially when the diameter is below 15 mm.

performance-wise, labelling glass test tubes differs significantly from labelling polyethylene (pe) or polypropylene (pp) test tubes. overlapped labelling helps assure success, together with an appropriate combination of face material and adhesive.

the importance of traceability

pharmaceutical products need to be traceable, and pharmaceutical packages usually have batch numbers and expiry dates printed on the label. Accordingly, the printability of the face material, often by thermal transfer, is important.

upm raflatac provides certificated products

pharmaceutical companies require that printers and converters use special label materials that have been put through extensive assessments such as migration studies and stability tests. pharmaceutical companies are served directly by upm raflatac with technical support for migration studies. After signing an nda, a full set of documents will be available and chemical details may be communicated.

there are two major end-use areas in retail information labelling:

price marking

  • labels printed in one or two colours
  • variable information printing (vip) techniques
  • no need for high environmental resistance

catch-weight labelling
direct thermal printing on pre-printed labels:

  • scandinavia, the uk, eastern europe: a four-colour printing process with a uv varnish makes the label both decorative and informativ
  • southern europe: one or two colour printing, an additional label used for decoration

in dry environments, e. G. For labelling fruits and vegetables,
eco direct thermal face materials are used for short life catch-weigh labels.

for more demanding applications, e. G. For labelling meats and cheeses,
top direct thermal face materials are used.

Tyre Labelling (Tl-01)

Get Latest Price

tyre labels function as carriers of important information about a tyre including the brand, type, dimensions and product bar code.

the adhesive for tyre labelling should perform well during the following stages:

  • conversion of the laminate into labels
  • dispensing of the label from the liner onto the tyre
  • distribution and storage on rough tyre profiles
  • removal from the tyre so that the label face pulls away cleanly

barrier properties are essential

for extremely rough tyre profiles like those on winter tyres, upm raflatac recommends raflatyre, a paper face with an aluminium barrier on the underside. the aluminium layer prevents components from both the tyre and adhesive from migrating through to the face. A second positive side to the aluminium layer is its ‘memory folding’ property, which helps the label conform and stay fixed to the tyre profile.

naturally there are environmental concerns over the use of aluminium, and for this reason some countries are moving towards the use of filmic face materials for tyre labels.

for general tyre labelling, syntyre, a pp based face material, is advisable in combination with upm raflatac’s rh/t high coat-weight adhesive.

syntyre tc 90 is recommended for tyre labels dispensed automatically.

choosing the right printing method

the most common printing methods for these labels are uv flexography for colourful brand marking and thermal transfer for printing variable information.

Wine Labelling (Wl-01)

Get Latest Price

with more than a decade’s experience in wine labelling, upm raflatac has a thorough understanding of the labelling conditions in the wine industry process.

carefully selected label face materials meet every requirement for aesthetics and functionality, and although films have begun to be more widely adopted, the focus remains on coated and textured paper materials.

wet strength and alkali-resistant treatments

  • all upm raflatac paper faces for wine labelling have a wet strength treatment which helps the paper fibres withstand fluctuations in temperature and humidity and prevents the formation of wrinkles and bubbles during the labelling process and in storage.
  • an alkali-resistant treatment is required when wine bottles are returned and cycled through a washing process. Papers with this treatment, combined with a dedicated wash-off adhesive, remain intact during the wash-off process to leave the machinery unobstructed. The term wsa is used to denote label papers with combined wet-strength and alkali-resistant treatments.

exquisite labels for quality wines and spirits

labels for high-quality wines and spirits are often elaborate, typically printed using an offset process in up to ten or more colours on cast-coated, textured or metallised papers.

complementary techniques such as embossing and hot foiling are also used. uv flexography is used when printing coated papers, for example when labelling standard quality wines produced in large volumes. digital printing techniques are beginning to be more common in the wine label business.
