Agapanthus or Lily-of-the-Nile or the African lily plant
Agapanthus can be grown in tropical and subtropical climates. They should be planted with care in too hot or cold climates.
Growing condition
· Agapanthus plant needs a well-drained soil. They are drought tolerant. Yellow leaf tips indicate waterlogged conditions.
· Agapanthus grows best in a moderately fertile soil. A soil that is too rich will promote soft lush growth that is prone to winter damage.
· The Other requirement is a warm, sheltered position in full sun for most of the day.In a hot climate area, Agapanthus will do better in partial shade.
· Plant the Agapanthus rhizomes one inch (2.5 cm) deep and space 24 inches (60 cm) apart.
· Keep plants well watered during the growing season to ensure success.
· Care
· Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system.
· Water the Agapanthus when the top of the soil is dry.
· In temperate climate Agapanthus plants should be placed in full Sun.
· For a neat appearance, remove old Agapanthus foliage before new leaves emerge.
· Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring.
Problems
· Agapanthus have few problems, although frost damage is a common issue in cold winters, even for the more hardy types.
· Agapanthus can be shy to flower if subjected to drought conditions following flowering.
· To ensure a good display next year, keep plants moist until autumn after flowers start to fade, which will encourage the development of new flower buds.
· There is a common misconception that agapanthus flowers better when pot-bound. Although they like to be cosy in the pot, flowering poorly when overpotted or over-divided, they also flower poorly when excessively pot-bound. Try repotting, plus watering and feeding in spring, to improve flowering.
· Too much shade, cold weather and lack of winter protection are also common reasons for agapanthus to fail to flower.
· Too much winter warmth may lead to early flowering, but the flower quality will be poor.
· Agapanthus can be grown in tropical and subtropical climates. They should be planted with care in too hot or cold climates.
