PH 13-8 Mo stainless is a martensitic precipitation/age-hardening stainless steel capable of high strength and hardness along with good levels of resistance to both general corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. In addition, the alloy exhibits good ductility and toughness in large sections in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. The excellent properties of PH 13-8 Mo stainless are obtained through close control of chemical composition and microstructure plus specialized melting which reduces impurities and minimizes segregation. Compared to other ferrous-based materials, this alloy offers a high level of useful mechanical properties under severe environmental conditions. 13-8 Mo stainless has good fabrication characteristics and can be age-hardened by a single low temperature treatment. Cold work prior to aging increases the aging, especially for lower aging tempratures. 13-8 Mo stainless has been used for valve parts, fittings, cold-headed and machined fasteners, shafts, landing gear parts, pins, lockwashers, aircraft components, nuclear reactor components and petrochemical applications requiring resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. Generally, this alloy should be considered where high strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking are required in a steel showing minimal directionality in properties. *PH 13-8 Mo stainless is a registered trademark of Armco Inc.

Elevated Temperature Use:
  • PH 13-8 Mo stainless has displayed excellent resistance to oxidation up to approximately 1100°F. Long-term exposure to temperatures between about 600-900°F (288-482°C) can result in reduced toughness in precipitation hardenable stainless steels. The reduction in toughness can be minimized in some cases by using higher aging temperatures. Short exposures to elevated temperatures can be considered, provided the maximum temperature is at least 50°F (28°C) less than the aging temperature.

A martinsitic precipitation hardening steel, Custom 450 mstainless steel offers high strength combined with excellent corrosion resistance similar to 304 stainless in corrosion resistance with moderate strength similar to that of 410 stainless. As with most precipitation hardened alloys, Custom 450 stainless has excellent transverse properties.Used when ease of welding and brazing in fabrication is required. Custom 450, unlike many precipitation hardening grades, Custom 450 can be used in the annealed condition.

Heat Treatment:
  • Solution heat treatment, heat at 1875/1925f (1024/1052c cool to below 90f (32c) to allow material to fully martensite. Material can be air cooled, but should be rapidly quenched for best response to aging.

Aging:
  • All solution treated materials: Condition H-900 4hrs and air cool. H-900 offers the best combination of ductility, strength and toughness. H-1150 increases ductility but decreases strength.

Corrosion Resistance:
The following table is for reference only, many factors can affect the corrosive resistance, a corrosion test for each application should be applied.

    General Characteristics of Stainless 422:
    • With better strength at higher temperatures, Stainless 422 is an appealing alternative to Stainless 403. It offers ductility and strength from room temperature to 1200F (649C) and resists scaling and oxidation to 1400F (760C).

    Heat Treatment of Stainless 422:
    • To anneal, heat to 1600 to 1650F (871 to 899C), then slowly cool in furnace
    • For stress relief, heat to 1100 to 1150F (593 to 621C) before furnace or air cooling
    • Harden by heating to 1875 to 1925F (1024 to 1052C) before oil quenching and tempering

    A-286 alloy is an age-hardenable iron base superalloy for applications requiring high strength from -320°F up to 1000°F long time, 1300-1500°F short time. Oxidation resistance is high for continuous service to 1500°F, intermittent to 1800°F. Aqueous corrosion resistance is comparable to 316/316L stainless. Heat treatment according to AMS 5525 requires a solution anneal at 1800°F, air cool. Age at 1325°F for 16 hours and then air cool.

    17-7 PH stainless steel is a stable, chromium-nickel-aluminum steel that’s frequently used in the aerospace industry and when meticulous, elaborate parts are needed.

    Resistance to Corrosion:
    • Corrosion resistance of Type 17-7PH stainless steel in all heat treated conditions, like other types of stainless steels - will develop superficial rust in some environments. For example, in a marine atmosphere, stainless steels show evidence of rusting after relatively short exposure periods. However, after exposure of one or two years, the amount of rust present is little more than that present at six months. As with all martensitic steels, 17-7PH stainless steel may be subject to cracking when exposed under stress in environments containing hydrogen sulfide. Such applications are not recommended.
