The saree has become a symbol of Indian culture featured in ancient art and literature. Indeed. Examples of the saree can be found as far back as the Indus Valley Civilization. Each region in India boasts of its own particular style of saree that distinguishes it from other areas.
Also, the different regions can have their own style of wearing sarees although the most common style is wrapped around the waist with the end draped over the shoulder. The garments can be handwoven with silk or other textile materials such as cotton. South India has been a leader in the production of silk sarees. There is a long standing tradition of weaving cooperatives in the South that has led to a great degree of variation in style and design. Silk is produced in areas like Bangalore, Mysore and Kolar.
Kanchipuram south silk saris are an example of a local South Indian silk weaving style. These saris are popular at weddings and come in a wide array of color patterns and textures. The Mysore crepe saree and the Coimbatore silk saree are other examples of renowned products from the South. The particular color of sarees can sometimes be used to tell something about the wearer. In certain regions, women from different castes and cultures may tend to wear sarees having a predominant color. In some cases, older married women wear different colors than unmarried women. However, new fashion design has placed some of these older traditions into the background.
Sarees continue as the most popular dress for specific types of occasions. The wedding saree is often distinguished by the use of special auspicious motifs and colors. More somber ceremonies like funerals would call for sarees of different color and a more austere appearance without the use of accompanying jewelry or other decoration. Again the customs for wearing sarees at different functions and gatherings can differ according to which region in India is involved. Sometimes customs can change from town to town and village to village.
Mentioned in the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as in Buddhist and Jain literature, the saree is one of India’s fashion gifts to the world. A garment that is not only attractive to the eye, but one that carries with it a long history of culture and tradition. The many styles and motifs available mirror the rich diversity of peoples and customs found on the Indian subcontinent.

Chrudar India is synomous with ethnic style of clothing. In the past both men and women wore it. Today the men wear it for ceremonial occasions. Women wear it frequently. The earlier style featured the broad waist as it tapers towards the ankle. It was just like the breeches worn by the Lords in England when they went out hunting the woods. Indian princes also wore these breeches like costumes for playing Horse Polo, hunting and stately occasions. Then, the material used was satin or silk, appropriate for royal wear.
Today, cotton rules in the tropical weather. Long churidars are liked by young girls. The northern churidar, India, comprises of long narrow shaped trousers. They are curled at the ankle in the form of churis (also refered as bangles). Three hooks close the churis at the ankle. These days the churidar is slightly wide at the bottom for the legs to go in. They can be buttoned at the end. The latest fashion statement of Churidar, India comes in ther form of lycra material. Many girls have accepted it gracefully.
