Sisal Fiber is one of the most widely used natural fiber and is very easily cultivated. It is obtain from sisal plant. The plant, known formally as Agave sisalana. These plants produce rosettes of sword-shaped leaves which start out toothed, and gradually lose their teeth with maturity. Each leaf contains a number of long, straight fibers which can be removed in a process known as decortication. During decortication, the leaves are beaten to remove the pulp and plant material, leaving the tough fibers behind. The fibers can be spun into thread for twine and textile production, or pulped to make paper products.

Pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) which is rich in cellulose, abundantly available, relatively inexpensive, low density, nonabrasive nature, high filling level possible, low energy consumption, high specific properties, biodegradability and has the potential for polymer reinforcement. The utilization of pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) as reinforcements in thermoplastic and thermosetting resins in micro and nano form for developing low cost and lightweight composites is an emerging field of research in polymer science and technology. In this paper we examines the industrial applicabiliy of PALF, mainly for production of composite materials and special papers, chemical feedstocks (bromelin enzyme) and fabrics.

Abaca is a bust fiber. The abaca fiber is extracted from the stalk of the plant. Abaca is also known as Manila hemp. It is a Musasea family plant native to Asia and planted in humid areas including in the Philippines and East of Indonesia. Abaca fibres are extensively used to produce ropes, woven fabrics, tea bags, etc. It is also called biodegradable and sustainable fiber. Abaca is considered the strongest of natural fibres, being three times stronger than sisal fibre, and is far more resistant to saltwater decomposition than most of the vegetable fibres. Compared to synthetic fibres like rayon and nylon, abaca fibre possesses higher tensile strength and lower elongation in both wet and dry states. The Philippines is the world’s largest source and supplier of abaca fibre for cordage and pulp for specialist paper. It supplies 85% of the needed abaca fiber around the globe.

Description:
  • The Flax fiber comes from the stem of a plant “Linum Usitatissimum”. The fibers form bundles or strands that are present in the fibrous layers lying beneath the bark of the plant. In the inner bark of this plant there are long, slender, thick-walled cells of which the fiber strands are composed.

The fibres in kenaf are found in the bast (bark) and core (wood). The bast constitutes 40% of the plant. "Crude fibre" separated from the bast is multi-cellular, consisting of several individual cells stuck together. The individual fibre cells are about 2–6 mm long and slender. The cell wall is thick (6.3 µm). The core is about 60% of the plant and has thick (≈38 µm) but short (0.5 mm) and thin-walled (3 µm) fibre cells.Paper pulp is produced from the whole stem, and therefore contains two types of fibres, from the bast and from the core

Featuresmie is one of the strongest natural fibers. It is better strength when wet. It is similar to linen.

Ramie is classified chemically as a cellulose fiber, just as cotton, linen and rayon. Leading producers of ramie are China, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines and Brazil.

Until recently ramie has been unknown in the ready-to-wear market in this country, but it is appearing in more garments. It is often blended with cotton and available in woven and knit fabrics that resemble fme linen to coarse canvas.

Ramie usage increased in the mid-1980s with a fashion emphasis on natural fibres and a loophole in textile import regulations. Ramie and garments made of more than 50 percent ramie, entered the United States without import quota limits. Legislation was passed in 1986 eliminating the quota-free status of ramie.

Ramie is also known as China-grass, rhea and grass cloth. The fibres are found in the bark of the stalk. The process of transforming ramie fiber into fabric is similar to manufacturing linen from flax. The fibre is very fine and silk-like, naturally white in colour and has a high lustre.

Natural fibers present important advantages such as low density, appropriate stiffness and mechanical properties and high disposability and renewability. Moreover, they are recyclable and biodegradable. There has been lot of research on use of natural fibers in reinforcements. Banana fiber, a ligno-cellulosic fiber, obtained from the pseudo-stem of banana plant (Musa sepientum), is a bast fiber with relatively good mechanical properties. Banana plant is a large perennial herb with leaf sheaths that form pseudo stem. Its height can be 10-40 feet (3.0-12.2 meters) surrounding with 8-12 large leaves. The leaves are up to 9 feet long and 2 feet wide (2.7 meters and 0.61 meter). Banana plant is available throughout Thailand and Southeast Asian, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Hawaii, and some Pacific islands.

Features:
  • The Bamboo fiber is a cellulosic fiber that is regenerated from bamboo plant. It is a great prospective green fiber with outstanding biodegradable textile material, having strength comparable to conventional glass fibers. Bamboo used for fiber preparation is usually 3–4 years old. Fiber is produced through alkaline hydrolysis and multi-phase bleaching of bamboo stems and leaves followed by chemical treatment of starchy pulp generated during the process. Bamboo fiber has various micro-gaps, which make it softer than cotton and increase its moisture absorption. They are elastic, environment-friendly and biodegradable. The fiber is bacteriostatic, antifungal, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, hygroscopic, natural deodorizer, and resistant against ultraviolet light. Furthermore, it is highly durable, stable and tough and has substantial tensile strength

Coir fibre is 100% natural fibre and originate in outer husk of coconut, and it comes from part of the seedpod of the coconut palm. It is the one of the natural fibre abundantly available in tropical region. It is mainly extracted from husk of the coconut fruit. The structure of coir fibre cell is narrow and hollow, with thick wall made up of cellulose. Mature fibre contains more lignin, a complex woody chemical, but less cellulose than fibres such as flax or cotton. This makes coir much stronger , coarser and less flexible.
