  •  Base Material: The bar starts as a hot-rolled mild steel billet. Mild steel, as a base, provides good inherent strength and formability due to its low carbon content (typically less than 0.30%).

     

  • Thermo-Mechanical Treatment (TMT) Process: This is the distinguishing feature that gives TMT bars their superior properties. The hot-rolled bars undergo a precise, three-stage process:

    1. Quenching: Immediately after rolling, the hot bar is rapidly cooled by a controlled water spray (often using technologies like "Thermex" or "HYQST"). This instantaneous cooling hardens the outer surface of the bar (forming a tough martensitic layer) while the inner core remains hot and austenitic (soft).

       

    2. Self-Tempering: As the bar exits the quenching box, the heat from the still-hot core flows outwards to the cooler, hardened outer surface. This self-tempering process tempers the martensitic outer layer, making it tougher and more ductile, while the core remains soft and ductile.

       

    3. Atmospheric Cooling: The bar then undergoes natural cooling on a cooling bed. During this stage, the hot, ductile core transforms into a ferrite-pearlite structure, creating a perfect balance between strength and flexibility.
