An Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD) is used in various industries to efficiently dry solids and evaporation liquids, particularly when handling heat-sensitive or viscous materials.
The centrally positioned rotor of a vertically agitated thin-film dryer (ATFD-V) features blades that fit together snugly. It revolves around an expertly manufactured jacketed casing.
The liquid is applied to the heated wall in a thin coating via a feed distributor at the entry site. As the film pours down, the high-speed rotor vigorously agitates and distributes it further. The material transforms through various phases, such as slurry, paste, and wet powder and comes out as dry, free-flowing amorphous or crystalline powder. The heating surface is renewed by continuous scrapping of dry solids for efficient heat transfer.

An Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD) is widely used in industries for efficient drying of solids and evaporating liquids, especially when dealing with heat-sensitive or viscous materials. The design and operation of ATFD allow for gentle yet effective drying, ideal for products that are prone to degradation under harsh conditions.
How It Works:-
The ATFD consists of a centrally positioned high-speed rotor with blades that fit together precisely inside a jacketed heating casing.
-
The feed material (solution, slurry, or wet cake) enters through a distributor and spreads into a thin film on the heated wall of the casing.
-
As the rotor revolves, it vigorously agitates the film, ensuring uniform distribution and efficient contact with the heated surface.
-
The material transitions through different stages—slurry → paste → wet powder → dry powder—before being discharged as a free-flowing amorphous or crystalline dry powder.
-
Continuous scraping by the rotor renews the heating surface, promoting excellent heat transfer and preventing fouling.
-
Accepts feed as slurry or wet cake: Flexible feedstock handling.
-
Indirect heating: Suitable for oxygen-sensitive and thermally sensitive products.
-
Low residence time: Ideal for heat-sensitive materials, minimizing degradation.
-
Uniform powder consistency: Ensures high product quality.
-
Wide operating pressure range, including vacuum operation down to 1 mbar: Facilitates drying of sensitive materials at lower temperatures.
Applications of ATFD:
-

Short-path distillation, also known as molecular distillation, is a specialized technique used for separating compounds under high vacuum conditions. In this process, the fluids operate in the free molecular flow regime, meaning that the mean free path of the molecules is comparable to the dimensions of the equipment.
How It Works:-
The SPDU features an internally mounted condenser, which plays a critical role in its operation.
-
The vapors generated from the heated surface travel a very short distance directly to the condenser surface.
-
This design eliminates significant pressure drop, allowing operation at extremely high vacuum levels, typically down to 0.001 mbar.
-
The short path ensures minimal thermal degradation of heat-sensitive materials by reducing residence time to only a few seconds.
-
Minimum liquid hold-up: Reduces processing time and material loss.
-
Ideal for heat-sensitive materials: Prevents decomposition or degradation of delicate compounds.
-
Excellent turn-down capability: Allows processing of variable feed rates without loss of efficiency.
-
High evaporation rate: Optimizes throughput while maintaining product integrity.
-
Operates at high vacuum (0.001 mbar): Facilitates distillation of high-boiling or thermally unstable compounds.
-
Heating temperatures up to 400°C: Suitable for processing a wide range of materials.
-
Short residence time: Typically a few seconds, which is beneficial for sensitive products.
Applications of SPDU:
-
Pharmaceutical Industry:
-
Concentration of bulk drug products and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
-
-
Chemical Industry:
-
Distillation of epoxy resins, esters, plasticizers, and stabilizers.
